Thanks, nice link uro, though I think I would do a few things differently then shown, I also like the sandstone look phearamedusa's rack feature has.

you can also buy colored grount and then you will not need to paint it. Also I dont see the need to clear coat or seal it for a desert animal. if it was for a humid enclosure then I can see the need for it. Most rocks are not shiney

Well, you would use a satin finish, the sealer is also there to limit wear, and to keep any toxins away from your animals.

Actually there are 4 geckos in that photo. Look close in the top left side and you will see another nose.

Re: Funny Things That Geckos Do Pics

that one's great.

Grout may not be toxic, but the color mixed into the grout and the styrofoam under it may be, in my opinion it better safe then sorry.

Re: Funny Things That Geckos Do Pics

i have checked and researched that grout in any color is not toxic. oh by the way you cant get yellows and bright colors only grey, rusty color, and a sand color. reason you cant get bright colored grout is because then they would have to add something toxic to get the bright colors. The other gray, sand and rust color comes from the natural ingredients in the grout as in sand, clay, rock, etc etc. The sealer will help it from chipping or scrachy nails. i still just dont like the shiney look. in the videos he spays paint on them to give him is color. then I would reccomend for shure the sealer. but you also dont have to paint the grout if you allready like the grout color. Also the strofoam would be toxic if eatin or cause a impaction for shure however grout is cement when it dries and I wouldnt think it would ever get back down to the foam unless you have a lizard that likes to eat cement.

there is some Styrofoam, under the great stuff foam, bottom and side against glass. This allowed for easy removal, and gave me several options with regards to where and how hides where made. The top surface is G.S. and was carved using a steak knife then covered with colored grout, the multi color stuff is granite spray paint (saw it used on another forum, or maybe this one) figured I'd give it a try. The hides are grouted, but not perfectly smooth, this was done to aid with shedding. A word of advice if you do this, be sure to fill all the little air bubbles in G.S. otherwise the bugs will use this as a safe hiding spot. It should be pretty interesting when I pull them out to see whats underneath, and even inside possibly. I did buy the sealer for it, both the grout and the paint but decided it was unnecessary as these are dry tanks, if I had a water feature, or a tank that required me to spray the tank a lot then sealer would protect the paint finish from wear.

The "cliffs" have been in use for about 6 weeks now. Some of the things I've noticed about them, is that one seems to have crackled pretty extensively. I either need to add more grout to it or redo the whole thing. The bad thing about having to re-grout will be taking it out, since each gecko has their preferred hide. I have three geckos in here, btw. I will probably move the plants to a location where the gecko will be less likely to use them as the potty..lol. Its turned into a royal pain to clean them everyday like I prefer to do. I have stuck a couple pieces of real rock into the G.S. to form the over hang, the actual color of the rock was a greyish green for the one piece and a color similar to the grout for the other. When I start the new version I 'll take more pictures and post a better description of how I did it.
