Has This Happened to You??
Ok so my new leo has been with me for a week now, and he hasn't eaten any mealies. So I went today and got some small crickets and put them in his tank. I came back in about three hours, and one of the small crickets was next to him, but had no legs. Is it ok for him to just eat the legs or do I need to do something to help him out?

Re: Has This Happened to You??
did he eat any of the crickets? or just a couple legs? or is it possible the legs are still in the tank or maybe the cricket didnt have any before you put it in the tank. how about wax worms try thos but dont overdo them as they can become addicted to them and they are too fatty and dont have much nutrition. however they can fatten up any gecko fast. do you have the mealies in a bowl or do you drop them on the floor in front of him?

Re: Has This Happened to You??
don't be worried about him not eating for a week. if he is new and you only had him for a week he is still adjusting to his new surroundings and is probably stressed. they won't eat when they're stressed. you can keep a dish of mealies in there and he will eat when he is ready. don't keep crickets in the tank because if he is not interested in eating them and the crickets get hungry, they can nibble on your gecko and you don't want that.
leave him alone for about a week with no handling, only change out water and maybe cleaning up some poo but thats about it. he has to get used to where he is first and too much going on will make him nervous. please go over the caresheet as well to make sure you have everything in the enclosure correct (temps, etc) that will help him feel more secure if everything is where it should be. good luck with him. ![]() Leopard Gecko Caresheet (Eublepharis macularius) - Reptile Information - Caresheets Database

Re: Has This Happened to You??
I put in two crickets, and one he must have eaten because it is no longer there. they both had legs when I put them in, and there is a dish with mealies in it. I might try some waxworms, but do they have small ones because he is just a little guy? can I get waxworms at just a local pet shop or do they have them at petco?

Re: Has This Happened to You??
you would be better off trying to put weight on with the crickets and mealies. Waxworms have no nutritional value and it would be just like you or me trying to add extra weight by eating nothing but ice cream... plus if you get started with them like urorex said, your little guy might not want to eat anything else but the waxworms, and that wouldn't be good. Dark had it right when he suggested giving your leo another week with minimal interaction.

Re: Has This Happened to You??
I've had my leopard gecko for a month. He eats crickets just fine. He really shows no interest in the mealworms. I have them in a shallow dish that the mealworms can't crawl out of. I try to pick the mealworms that have just recently shed. I'll put oatmeal and pieces of carrot or peas in the dish for the mealworms & crickets to eat.
Someone from my reptile club suggested putting the crickets in the dish with the mealworms, take the hind legs off the crickets so they can't get out of the dish. So my Bailey will learn that what is inside the dish is food. I've tried that for about a week now, and so far he still does not touch the mealworms. He gets the crickets much quicker, they don't have any place to hide. The mealworms are not active like the crickets are, so the thrill of hunting something is not there. I've also tried holding the mealworms with my fingers or tweezer right in front of him so the worms are wriggling. Still, no interest. I'm running out of things to try. I've got about 90 mealworms chilling in my fridge; eventually they are either going to turn into beetles or die. My pet mice Coco & Licorice are getting spoiled, I have been giving them some mealworms. Any other suggestions? |

Re: Has This Happened to You??
So it turns out that he/she didn't eat the crickets legs, it had just shed and was laying there. four crickets have passed through and only one has been eaten as far as I can tell. he/she is pooping so I know that it's eaten something. Still hasn't touched the mealies though, which I thought was strange because my old leo only ate mealies. I have tried holding them in front of him/her but no luck.

Re: Has This Happened to You??
What's his environment like? His cage? Where is it in the house?
Even though you have had him for a couple of weeks now, if he's not eating yet, he may still be very stressed out. Put him in a very low traffic area in the house for awhile. Make sure he has proper temperatures and a nice hide, and then don't mess with him. It sounds like you offer her food often. Hold off for a couple of days. Don't bother him at all. Then, as quickly as you can, put some food in with him and leave. If all it is is stress, this may help. After a few days of total quiet, he may decide to eat. But if he keeps fasting, you may want to get him, to a vet, especially if he starts losing weight. At that point the vet may be able to diagnose an illness, or help you to get her appetite jump started.

Re: Has This Happened to You??
ok so last night I was in my room which is where the cage is, and I saw my little guy stalking a cricket. So I just sat on my bed and watched for a little bit. He looked just like a little tiger!
then out of nowhere the tip of his tail started flickin back and forth. after a couple seconds of that, the whole tail was going back and forth like a little dog. He lunged at the cricket and bam dinner was served. |
