Leo Wont Eat....
hey, had my male leo for about a month now and it seems like he doesnt want to eat anything, i put in crickets but he doesnt seem to care, tried giving him meal worms(which my female loves) but still no response. like I said, i put crickets in and they seem to disappear but I dont know if hes eating them or if theyre climbing over the divider onto the females side?
ive read that they wont eat if the temp is too high or low but I keep it between 75-80. also, i know they dont eat prior to shedding but he just shed last week and im sure he wont shed for a couple more weeks for now..... any suggestions? |

Re: Leo Wont Eat....
don't keep Leo's myself but here is a link to the care sheet. Leopard Gecko Caresheet (Eublepharis macularius) - Reptile Information - Caresheets Database
They should have a temp RANGE from about 75 on the cool side to a warm side at about 90. So it sounds like your temps may be off. What other set up information can you give us? What kind of tank? What kind of substrate? What else is in the tank? ect...

Re: Leo Wont Eat....
try isolating him and feeding him. if the crickets still disappear then you know hes just a shy feeder. we have a high yellow who we believe is eating because she poo's every night, but we never see it.
my gf also leaves a feeding tray with mealworms in it every night... im trying to get her to stop this and put the 2 geckos on a feeding schedule because I have read they tend to eat better when on a schedule..... so this is another thing you could try. |

Re: Leo Wont Eat....
I would definitely get your temps up. The warm side needs to be 88-90, which the temperature should be on the surface. Leo's need belly heat in order to digest food, so if he isn't getting enough heat, he might not eat.
I would separate the geckos, or at least black out the divider so they do not see each other. I've never had an issue with male/female groups eating, but it can happen. Offering a dish of mealworms at night isn't a bad idea, as long as they are gutloaded prior to feeding. I don't stick to a feeding schedule, as my geckos are all hungry at different times. I've never had a problem with them not eating due to this either. |

Re: Leo Wont Eat....
we have a little one that she was worried wasnt eating. this was the reason for the schedule (apart from the fact that they are really fun to observe eating
) we witnessed her eating (alot...) tonight, so crisis averted and all is good in the world |

Re: Leo Wont Eat....
My Bailey loves crickets, but will not eat mealworms. Which surprised me because the breeder told me that Bailey was rasied on mealworms. The mealworms are not as lively as the crickets. The crickets need to be moving in order to get his attention.
I have tried several different ways, holding them with my fingers or tweezer and a small shallow dish. I know the mealworms are not crawling out, I put 10 in the dish, in the morning 10 still are in the dish. I put a piece of carrot & oatmeal in the dish to keep the mealworms gutloaded. The warm side is between 80 - 90 degrees. The rock cave that Bailey sleeps in is on the cool side of the tank. I lightly mist the paper towels inside the rock cave once a day, and change them as needed. |
