Breeding Normal Gecko

I got the normal spotted gecko not sure if he is male/female yet (just recently got it and waiting for it to get used to me before I try to take a peek). Anyway if I would to mate him/her what type would be the best to mate with it to produce cool morphs. here is a pic

Re: Breeding Normal Gecko

There are some many different morphs out there these days and if you dont know exactly what you have, your not going to know what they will end up looking like.

Re: Breeding Normal Gecko

The picture is small, but it could be a high yellow. In order to produce the "cool" morphs, you will need to invest some money and time into learning the genetics of which morphs create each different morph when bred together.

The money part comes into play when you begin buying the morphs required to produce other morphs.

You need to learn about recessive, dominant, and co-dominant genes and how they affect the outcome of breeding.

Re: Breeding Normal Gecko

i understand I have alot to learn about breeding. however I was just wondering. i wouldnt want to mate a high yellow spotted with a shtcb or albino and then find out that the babys are worth 20.00 a piece. or do most people just get 2 shtcb or 2 albinos and try to just make more similar to what there mating. i just like the idea of mating a normal with something different and coming up with something rare or unusual.

Re: Breeding Normal Gecko

Breeding a normal to anything will not result in anything glamorous or rare. Most people that breed for cash do invest in pairs, trios, and quads of those carrying the trait in which they wish to pass on.

Re: Breeding Normal Gecko

ok so what your saying if I were looking to make money at this and im not talking about trying to get rich here. but at least make money than it would be better for me to get 3-4 pairs of a expensive breed and just breed thos and if I deciede to cross 2 different expensive breeds then I may come up with something rare.

i really am not looking to do this to make money just curious about breeding and it sounds like its alot of work and money to pump out some exp babys, if anything I do like to learn stuff so maybe I will just get another norm and breed on occasion and give away babys or keep a small family with me. lol

Re: Breeding Normal Gecko

If you want to make a little cash selling Leopard Geckos, you are best off buying some established morphs from good bloodlines. The offspring from the first few clutches should be sifted. You keep all the females you find attractive, and then you buy the same morph, a male, from a different breeder. This way, you are keeping the bloodline free from accidental incest.

Thats when you will be able to start really breeding out Leopard Geckos and turning a profit.

Re: Breeding Normal Gecko

Can I make a suggestion?

I wouldn't mate your leo unless you're going to keep the babies and you really want them. Breeding just for the sake of breeding is not a wonderful idea, because then you have to find homes for them. There are already so many unwanted and abused reptiles out there, if you can, you want to direct people to adopt those that are already alive and need homes.

Also, mating and pregnancy can place a great strain on your female. It's best not to put her through that unless you really want to keep the babies, or you know you already have homes for the ones you don't want to keep.

Not that I'm against breeding, certainly! I'm just against casual breeding, when someone just wants to see what will happen. Those situations don't always turn out well.

Re: Breeding Normal Gecko

i know you can breed them as many times as someone would like and you also can stop breeding at any time you like from what I know. unfortunatly when I get involved in something I usally like to learn it all. i am not a kid and if I produce babys I would deffinatly keep or make shure they were in good hands. im not talking about breeding alot and having a overload of babys. i am a responsible person. just like to learn alot.
