Question

Ok so...I've been looking to get a leopard gecko, and I've heard sand is bad because of impaction, but in PetsMart, I saw "calcium sand". Is that good for them?

Re: Question

Calcium sand is horrible. I don't know why they sell that stuff still. What is it? Its the equivalant of tums (calcium carbonate), all crushed up. It neutralizes the stomach acids making it harder and harder for the stomach to digest what its eating. The animal will then get bound up with exoskeleton, sand, whatever until it can't digest any more and dies.

In a nutshell, stick to paper towel, slate, tile, newspaper, etc..

Re: Question

Carpet is great, so is tile. Anything that they can't get into their mouths.

Re: Question

No, i would not try large gravel. They can still swallow it. Another reason, if they try to dig and make a burrow the gravel will colapse on them and they would get stuck. Which that wouldnt be good.

Very, very admirable. It's definitely better to know before getting the animal!

Don't be too afraid of making mistakes. We all have and do make mistakes often. It's being willing to correct those mistakes once you learn about them that makes a person a good reptile keeper.

Doing your research ahead of time, though, is definitely the best way to go. You'll make less mistakes, and they're less likely to be dangerous ones.

Re: Question

You and your gecko are sure to be happier, and you will waste less money by researching FIRST and then getting the animal instead of having to buy and then replace everything!! LOL We would love to see pictures when you get your gecko Oh, and I personally use repti-carpet and keep paper towel over the part where she goes to the rest room (they typically go in the same spot) for even easier clean up. But everything that people mentioned above is good...
