Can a Leo Shed Too Much?!
As you may recall, my leo Matilda had some problems shedding when I first got her. Now she is shedding wonderfully, but she is shedding literally every two weeks! And she is full grown...she is almost 5 years old now. I am pretty sure that is more than normal!? So I have two questions...
1) Is it bad that she is shedding this much? Could this cause some problems? I can't think of any reason it would be bad, but I am no expert. 2) She spends almost all of her time in her moist hide...Is her hanging out in the moist environment CAUSING her to shed? I didn't think that it worked that way, but again, I am no expert. Since it is her favorite hide I don't want to take the moist hide out, but I could just stop spraying the paper towels if that was making her shed too much...but you would think that her body would tell her to go hang out in a dryer place if that were the case! She does have other hides on both the warm and cool sides of her tank. Thoughts?? Thanks my herp expert friends ![]() Tamara |

Re: Can a Leo Shed Too Much?!
Hmmm. My 10 and 11 Month old's shed about a couple days apart from one another, every two weeks or so. But I'm attributing that to growth..
However, I am no expert either, but it seems like a biological problem with the gecko, not neccessarily bad, is she eating/drinking ok? Active and alert? How much time does she spend in the hide? It may just as well be the season. Like I said I'm no expert, just throwing things up. However.. I would make sure it is not affecting her general health first and foremost. ![]() |

Re: Can a Leo Shed Too Much?!
She is eating and drinking fine...her activity level is the same now as it was before when she wasn't shedding at all!! I think her activity level is normal...sleeps most of the day in her hide, comes out in the evening...aside from shedding all the time, she seems quite normal! I am interested to see how long this lasts...if she will just continue on this same pattern for a while...

Re: Can a Leo Shed Too Much?!
As long as everything else is fine I wouldn't worry about the shedding.
Do you weigh her? Its possible that, even though she doesn't seem to be visibly growing, that she is putting on weight that requires more shedding.

Re: Can a Leo Shed Too Much?!
my gecko zeppy just turned five years old and he sheds about twice a month. the vet said he's perfectly healthy. and remember, the skin they shed and eat is full of leftover nutrients, so it can't be a bad thing as long as the rest of the behavior appears normal!

Re: Can a Leo Shed Too Much?!
Thanks guys! Sounds like I don't need to worry...
Merlin, Yes I do have a scale and weigh her...she has (much to my amazement) stayed EXACTLY the same weight for quite some time. She gained 3 grams when I first got her (over a month or so) because she was being underfed before...but since then, exactly the same at 59g! |
