Re: Worms Hiding ?

What I do is get a plant dish and use that to put the food in. It works, maybe a few get out but nothing like before.

Re: Worms Hiding ?

You could try getting one of those dishes with the lid that goes just around the edges, but has a hole in the middle (hard to explain, sorry). The lid makes it a lot harder for the worms to crawl out of the bowl, but still allows your lizard to see and get to the worms. You could rig up the same thing a lot cheaper by just taping a little paper lip around the edge of your feeding dish, so that it overhangs maybe a quarter inch toward the center of the dish, leaving most of the dish uncovered.

Re: Worms Hiding ?

Some people also feed them by hand with tweezers, which might be an option for you. It's good bonding. At least for you.

What I tended to do with my herps that ate bugs was to get a little cage to use as a feeder cage. You can just get one of those little plastic critter keepers from a pet store for a few bucks. Just big enough to give your leo some room to hunt. Then you put a few mealworms (or crickets) in with him and let him go at it for twenty minutes or so. Whatever worms are left when he's done, you put back with the others, and he goes back into his cage. I find this effective because you can clearly see how many he's eating, and you don't have to play guessing games trying to figure out if he's healthy. You also know pretty quickly if there's a problem. And you don't have worms (or crickets) escaping into the substrate and multiplying.

Re: Worms Hiding ?

You probably shouldn't leave him to pick through your substrate to try to catch the worms, he may ingest it and become impacted.
Find a dish that the worms can't climb out of, but he can see into and try that.

Re: Worms Hiding ?

This happens to me albeit alot lol, My male will often times dig out these worms. I don't know how he figured out they are underneath, but he will start Flinging sand everywhere, if I see this however I usually will dig the worms back up and let my guys know that there is food on the table when I do do it. Often times if you think the Gecko(s) has eaten all of them, check under the bowl =P

Re: Worms Hiding ?

You can get a small stoneware bowl with high sides that are glazed and smooth.
The mealworms can't climb out.

Re: Worms Hiding ?

I've had pretty good luck with clear glass dish's with a high side and haven't had an escape yet.. Plus being clear they can see what's inside the dish quicker.

Re: Worms Hiding ?

if your talking the king mealworms don't waste your cash on the wormdish they can escape. Small to medium sized didn't seem to escape but you'd need alot for the dish to appear full of wiggling lunch/dinner. For the large ones I hand feed using tweezers, the worm dish is now being used as a water dish less the lid bit.

Re: Worms Hiding ?

Also, what type of substrate are you using anyway? I can't think of any that you *should* be using for a leopard gecko that would allow the grubs to burrow. If you're using sand, you might not need a bowl. You might need a new substrate
