I Was Wondering..
My female Leopard gecko has an awful amount of what seems like fun chasing my fingers around her enclosure. I was wondering if this is actually enjoyable to her? ( Like a cat chasing string sort of thing.. ) The male who is in the enclosure could care less about my hand. However he will actively hunt anything that moves, and snatch it right up, often times trying to dig out crickets. But my female ceases to amaze me, she'll even come right out of her cave, or stop what she's doing to come across the cage and get excited about my fingers, tail going nuts and everything. I've let her bite me before, and she just kind of clamps on for a second, and lets go, and is on her way after that. But maybe even five minutes later. She'll go at it again. The only real time she won't do this is when she is sleeping.
Any thoughts? ++ It does'nt seem like she thinks it a threat, when she is sleeping/napping she will just look up at it and go back to sleep. This is awfully interesting to meh :] She is wicked cute, getting right up close to my finger just with a look of absolute amazement it seems! +++ Will try to catch this on camera for you all :] |

Re: I Was Wondering..
Everytime I look at leopard geckos they remind me more of a cat then any reptile, don't know what it is, but seeing how someone named them leopard geckos im sure im not the only one who sees that.
Maybe she's terratorial, or maybe she thinks its fun.

Re: I Was Wondering..
Does your female get enough food? Maybe the male is dominating at feeding time, and she is still hungry and therefore eager to hunt?
Or she could just have a strong hunting instinct. I do love the way that Leopard Geckos wiggle their tails -- definitely like cats.

Re: I Was Wondering..
I know she is getting plenty of food =] Her tail is nice and plump; I love to spoil her, I will take out the male when it is time for her to eat, and make sure she has plenty of Mealies, freshwater, and powder. I sometimes will even catch a cricket or two for her and wiggle it in front of her, and she'll snatch it right up.

Re: I Was Wondering..
Perhaps it really is just a product of her instincts. She's geared to hunt anything that looks like prey, and she will bite you at the end if you let her. I don't know if it's actually "fun" for her, but it sounds like it might be good practice, and it's probably part of what she'd do naturally in the wild. I don't think it's hurting her.
Although if she starts showing signs of stress, you may want to stop for awhile and see if it's upsetting her.

Re: I Was Wondering..
As entertaining as it is you might want to discourage it.
You are training your gecko to bite you. Not the best idea for a pet.

Re: I Was Wondering..
It's not something I try to do, trust me, I just change her food, water, etc, and she'll come to me. Just for kicks I give her what she wants, if it be a cricket or a worm by hand. I've only let her bite me about twice I believe. I'm scared of her lol.
I find feeding her by hand to be funny and really personal.( If that sounds wierd? lol ) My male on the other hand would rather actively hunt anything that will fit in his mouth and tastes delicious. ** I was also wondering, can they have sweets? Someone told me they had a sweet tooth, or at least some of em do lol ( I.e. Licking a bit of Honey? Little bit of sugar? ) |

And If they like the sugar too much you may end up with a picky eater on your hands.
