Re: Baby with a Broken Leg
Thanks for the input, guys. I've always given my geckos calcium, and I am aware of the disease. I also already have a uvb light or two around the house, so I can probably stick one of those in there. But thanks for the link, though. But it's only the one leg, not any of the others, and it doesn't quite resemble the picture. I also buy gut loaded livestock for food for them, and this is what I have been giving her. There is also a leopard gecko expert at my store who raised them for years, who I spoke to after I posted this. He did say that she is too small to be splinted, and he is talking about amputation. And she is only dragging the one hind leg. It is possible that she had some sort of deficiency when she was living by herself in the store, though that is unlikely because she is small enough to where she probably hadn't been out of employee care for long. Thanks for all of the feedback. If I can find a way, I might try taping it if I can do it without stressing her out too much. Other than her leg, she is a healthy gecko in every other way. She has a good appettite and no other injuries, aside from the shedding malfunction I mentioned before. If anyone has any other ideas, though, I would like to hear them.

Re: Baby with a Broken Leg
If the leg doesn't seem to be hindering the gecko I don't think I would feel comfortable with amputation. Sometimes when they get bigger they are able to use a "deformed" limb to some extent. I had a Bearded Dragon that I "rescued" from petsmart while I was working there that had somehow broken one of his front legs and it had healed at a weird angle. He would still use it to climb and what not. In fact after a few months it seemed to get a bit better as well. I would really suggest holding off on anything drastic.
Keep an eye on it, help with sheds by bumping up humidity and soaks in warm water, and as long as it seems otherwise health just let it be.

Re: Baby with a Broken Leg
I'm still trying to find the less drastic routes. Hence my posting.
I have no plans on amputating the limb until I see that it is becoming infected. I'm no stranger to animals with awkwardly healed injuries, so I've been hoping that this will heal in any way, shape, or form. Even if it does become infected and amputation is necessary, she will still walk on the nub, and lead a happy life. |
