Infared Light

hey guys
I was just wondering I got an infared light to use to add extra heat. Is this o.k. or will it give my gecko a skin condtion or something? Thanks!

Re: Infared Light

I use the Deluxe Arizona Hot Clamp Lamp with Dimmer along with an Exo-Terra 100W Heat Glo Infared Heat Lamp bulb to add additional warmth to my set up. I purchased both at PetSmart and they work great. You may want to purchase a stand for it if your set up includes an overhead light already.

Re: Infared Light

I am using a 75w bulb in a small heating lamp I bought for his original heat source. I got a heat mat when I found out I needed it. But is there anyway the light can hurt him? Oh and waht do you mean a stand? The terrarium is on top of a rack with shelves on it and the light is like 4 inches above the top of it.

Re: Infared Light

The stand is just a way of hanging your light over the tank so it doesn't rest on the lid. It isn't necessary if you have a metal or glass lid, but a must-have if any part that would otherwise come in contact with the heat source is made of plastic!

I shouldn't think that a 75w bulb could do any damage. There is some debate over compact UV bulbs, but other than that, most bulbs are fine!

Re: Infared Light

Exactly, Jwurm. If the top of the cage is plastic, it will melt without a stand to keep the lamp from contacting it. The stand I have is the ZooMed Repti Lamp Stand. It works great for both a light source or a hanging drip bottle. The light from an infared source has no ill effects on a gecko. I leave mine on 24/7. Just adjust the intensity with the dimmer as needed.

Re: Infared Light

The lights not resting on the lid. The terrrium is next to my dresser so the lamp is clamped to the side of it so it hangs of over the tank. Thanks guys!

Re: Infared Light

I've been told that heat emitters work well too.

Heat emitter? Like a heat pad?

Re: Infared Light

A heat emitter is like a ceramic light bulb with a flat face. It produces only heat but no light.
