Slight Problem

I usually buy wax worms from a gas station every once in a while to feed my gecko. Well the other day, I accidentally bought the wrong kind of worm. I think they were labeled as white spikes. Anyways, I have no idea what to do with them. Can leopard geckos eat them? At this point I just want to know if there's anything that I can do with them, since I generally don't fish or do anything that would allow me to use them for something else.

Re: Slight Problem

I have never heard of these worms and would be leary of feeding them to my animal. If you really need something to do with them, toss them outside for the birds to eat or return them and exchange them for waxworms.

Truthfully, I would be leary of feeding waxworms from a gas station. Fishing bait, and reptile prey are raised differently.

Re: Slight Problem

I would throw them outside, but they wouldn't last very long. There's a lot of snow out there. But as for the wax worms, I've been feeding them to her for a while so I think they're okay, but I think I'm gonna lay off them for a while until I can find a better place to buy them.

Re: Slight Problem

I beleive what he is talking about are maggots.
And I would also be hesitant about buying feeders from a gas station or bait house. These people are not selling something to be used as food for captive animals but rather for fish bait.
There's no telling what sort of things they have used on them that, over time, would possibly have a toxic effect on your pets.

Re: Slight Problem

A gas station isn't the best place to get your reptile food. Paying a little more for some feeders from a pet store and then gut loading them yourself is far safer and better for your gecko.

Re: Slight Problem

I've stopped buying wax worms and now I just buy crickets. I can't exactly post a picture of the worms, they all died ( problem solved, I suppose). Anyways, thanks for the help everybody.

Re: Slight Problem

Also just to add, waxworms aren't the best feeder choice in the world. Yes, in moderation there's no harm, but too many can lead to fatty liver disease and cause many problems in the future. There are also stories that Leopard Geckos will refuse to eat anything else BUT waxworms. I'm glad the problem is resolved, just added my 2c about waxworms

Re: Slight Problem

I feed her crickets too, but I like to keep wax worms in a little bowl so that she can eat them if she wants too.

Re: Slight Problem

I would refrain from keeping a bowl of waxies in the tank. The Leo will more than likely prefer to eat those as it would be easier than to hunt the crickets. Waxworms should be fed once a week at most as a treat, not a staple or daily snack.
