Re: Renal Disease in Leos...

Renal failure means that the kidney is failing, or has already failed. In an animal that requires animal protein as part of its diet, treatment for such a disease is pretty grim. Protein intake plays a role in kidney and is often "lowered" as part of the treatment. Thats almost impossible to do with a leo seeing as animal protein makes up the bulk of what they eat.

Thanks, Rich.

I know all about renal disease in general... I'm an animal science student and I've taking tons of medical classes...
What I actually meant was what can my friend expect along the lines of cost of frequency of treatments. Has anyone had first hand experience with this problem?

Re: Renal Disease in Leos...

I have had many iguanas with that, but never a leopard gecko. They do have kidney medication you can get, but the vet orders it through a regular pharmacy and you pick it up, I will warn you though it runs around 60 bucks every two weeks.

I do happen to agree with Rich though, Leopard Geckos eat animal protein all the time, that is going to be a huge problem in recovery. Have you talked to your vet about the long term effects this is going to have, or if you can even begin to treat it with the natural diet of the gecko? you also ned to keep them well hydrated with renal disease and geckos are not the easiest things to give subcu fluids too as they are so small. I have only had to do that a few times and it was a total nightmare
