yes, I keep the moist hide in always too. I ordered a large one now so hoepfully she will like it better when it comes. She has grown so much =)

I will keep soaking and if it doesn't work I will look for the eye lubricant or the mineral oil. Thank you! I got most off..it is just that one toe! Darn it! It isn't budging! I wonder how long I should soak her for?

Thank you all for your help! I did finally get it all off YAY! I soaked her for 10 minutes...she seemed ok but tried to climb out lol...then I re saoked again for 10-15 and used the Q-tip to rub while she was in the water and THAT is what got it off!

Thanks again!

Re: Shed Not Coming Off Toes!

That is great that you got it all off!! My leo's previous owner never provided a moist hide or helped get the skin off her toes for her 4 years on this earth!! So, she had a ton of build up on her toes and it was NOT coming off with soaks and q-tips. I had her at the vet this morning for the shedding and some other issues, and he said (and this is a very well respected herp vet in the area) that you can put a touch of dawn or similar dish soap on their toes and let it just sit for 10-15 min and then try rubbing off the skin and it usually comes right off! It sounds like your problems are all fixed, but if it happens again, apparently this will take off even the most stubborn skin!

Re: Shed Not Coming Off Toes!

Those toes can be a challenge! I just got done gecko-wrestling, myself. Freckles, one of our leopard geckos (the one in my avatar, there), can be a very vocal girl when she is annoyed, and she was furious with me! But now her toes are all clean, and she has some crickets to hunt, so maybe she will forgive me...

Re: Shed Not Coming Off Toes!

thank you all for the help, I knew I could count on you for the help we needed =) I hope th enew moist hide will help her shed better...this was the only time she needed help. I also think maybe she is fatter and she just cold reach her back foo very well to pull it of. I was watching her and she looked like she was struggling. I kow I don't over feed her though...she is chubby. I think it is normal for them to be this size, but I am not 100% sure what the natualy healthy size would be and I don't have a scale. I feed her about every other day sometimes I skip an extra day...and she won't eat if she isn't hungry..so I can't see how she would be over weight. her main diet is crickets and giant mealworms when I can get her to take them instead of the crickets..she is finicky sometimes with what she wants to eat =) I will get a recent pic of her, she has really grown! Maybe then you could tell if she looks like a normal size/weight.

Another thing maybe is the tile I have is too slippery for her to reach her back feet without loosing rip? I am not sure if this is true or just me worrying..she hasn't had any problems before and she has shed so many times before this without problems....I am just trying to think why this has happened. I guess maybe it just happens sometimes? I give her calcium in a dish for her all the time and dust once a week...with multiviamins..so I don't think she is negleted or deprived of anything..that would cause her harm or trouble.

It was just one foot and acouple toes on the foot, so maybe the shed just broke off when she was pulling it off and she was unable to pull anymore once the tore leaving the toes behind?

It is good to know about the dawn soap =) especially if this happens again. Thanks again everybody! I will get the pic soon =)

Re: Shed Not Coming Off Toes!

I am not so sure about the dishwashing liquid. I woud be very hesitant to put that on the animal, particularly since in the shed they would be nibbling and biting at the area.
I would stick with something like the mineral oil.

Re: Shed Not Coming Off Toes!

If you think the tile is to slippery you could try adding a layer of the shelf liner stuff, they have some that just sits on top of whatever surface you want and it has a little bit of texture to it. You could get a small roll and add a couple of squares, then replace them as needed.

Re: Shed Not Coming Off Toes!

i would not put dishsoap on a shed just because Leopard Geckos eat their sheds and in turn would be eating the dishsoap. that can't be good.

This is not the kind of thing where you would put it on and leave them alone...you would put it one and let it 'soak in' if you will while you are supervising him/her and then take the skin off. This is what the vet suggested for very stubborn skin - not used in a situation where the gecko is still trying to get it off themselves with their mouth.
