Re: The Vet Visit...
Okay... I've managed to find Zoo Meds ReptiSun 5.0 UV Fluorescent for $22.99 online at Petsmart and Zoo Meds ReptiSun 2.0 UV Fluorescent online for $12.49. Both excluding the light fixtures.
However, 2.0 light doesn't have any information supporting the prevention or reversal of metabolic bone disease in reptiles or being able to increase the appetite and activity levels in its description like the 5.0 description does. The 5.0 was suggested by vet for those reasons.... So with that being said, will the 2.0 be as effective as the 5.0 light? Obviously, that's my main concern considering Envie just started a liquid diet and antibiotic regime for the next 28 days. Thanks again ![]() |

Re: The Vet Visit...
thats because the 2.0 is designed for animals that require very low uvb if any at all,,
I have never done rehab work with a 5.0 fluorescent,, I have always used the mercury vapor bulbs,, I personally find fluortescents useless in the way of reversing metabollic bone disease. However that is in the cases of iguanas, bearded dragons and the high uvb requiring animals. I have done many leopard geckos and I personally would never put a 5.0 in with a nocturnal animal. but that is just my opinion,, I have done great work with the 2.0 on snakes and frogs and geckos,, just in the last year.

Re: The Vet Visit...
Yeah I'm not familiar with these kind of lights at all so I was just very weary as to why the 2.0 didn't have the same description or even mention anything that the 5.0 light did.
Okay so since the 2.0 was designed for lizrds with specifically low uvb requirements... it would be as effective on them on as lizard using 5.0 flur with a high uvb requirement? So how you worked with leopard geckos with parasites? Envie is only 6.0 grams so I don't if that have anything to do to influence the lighting requirements. To make matters more confusing, the vet actually told me 5.0 or higher (not lower) if I can find one... but hopefully he said that out of error? Thanks once again. P.S. can anyone please forward/link/message me any trusted information on leopard geckos and uvb requirements? please anything that could help educate me is clearly needed! |

Re: The Vet Visit...
leopard geckos do not normally require any uvb lighting. That is the part that confuses me about your vet,, did he suggest to use that all the time, or just while rehabbing him?
I have no idea why he would suggest anything higher than a 5.0 to begin with,, you start dealing with desert animals at that point,, that are not nocturnal, like bearded dragons and such. As far as forwarding you a link about leopard geckos requiring uvb,, I am not sure that there is any, if so I would be weary of wHat I read. When I speak of using uvb on nocturnal animals, I use it only to do rehab work when they are ill,, or to sometimes trigger a feeding response if I have an animal that is not eating.

Yes I have worked with many animals with parasites,, it is usually panacur, that is used to treat that. I do not think the lack of uvb is why she is so skinny,, that would be the parasites. Leopard geckos dont normally require uvb.
