Correct light bulb wattage?

I'm setting up my 40 gallon tank. What light bulb wattage would be best for the size tank I have? I was thinking of getting a 60 wat bulb.

Re: Correct light bulb wattage?

It depends on the temperature you want the tank. A 60 watt seems a little low, if it's going to be the only heat source.

it also depends on what you want the humidity to be. What's going in there?

And what the temperature in the room is.
You just have to play with the wattages to get what you need.

I think that would be a leopard gecko?? Since it is in the leopard gecko forum,, who knows though I could be wrong, lol

Unless you keep your house at VERY warm temps I think it will be a little too cold

Re: Correct light bulb wattage?

I will be getting a leopard gecko. I live in a studio apartment, where I keep the room temp at an even 70 degrees. I have an under tank heater, in the cooler months I will use it along with the light source. I live in FL, during the warmer months I don't think I'll need the under tank heater, unless I need to turn on the AC to take out high humidity.

Ah yes but it wouldn't be the first time that something got posted in the wrong area of the forums.
It always pays to ask and make sure!

Re: Correct light bulb wattage?

The size of the tank isn't the critical; thing - its the depth of the tank that counts - we have shallow 45s that are only 12" deep. Since they rarely if ever bask and are primarily nocturnal - although some of ours are curious critters and come out during the day, the light is mainly for heat. We have kept ours at a room temp of about 72 and then use a 60 watt normal household bulb at one end of the tank during daylight hours. Only one of males is regulalry "under' the bulb. All the females stay in their hides on the other side of the tanks during daylight. We have done this for years with successful rearing and breeding. In the wild these guys spend a lot of time under rocks and in burrows where temps are lower and their is a little more humidity. They don't need to get too hot. We also keep our on bark chips (not pine) and have also used dry peat rather than sand and have never had a compaction issue.
