Heat mat or heat wave lamp? Also Calcium question.
Which is better for leopard geckos? I was looking at different heat choices in the pet store and in the Dr. Foster & Smith catalog, and was wondering if I should get a under tank heat mat or a ceramic heat wave lamp. I live in FL, it does not get that cold here. (I'm new to FL, I've only been here about 9 months now.) I have a 40 gallon tank. For a young gecko, I will be sectioning off half of the tank. I should then get a lower watt heat mat. Right? How long do those heat mats last?
I also have a questions about what type of calcium & vitamins to buy. What brand is better? Fluker's has a Hi-Calcium powder diet. Fluker's also has the Cricket Quencher with or without calcium. Rep-Cal has 3 different calcium powders, with or without phosphorus added. After reading the labels, I was getting a bit confused as to what I should get. I'm planning on getting my little one in March! Can't wait! |

Re: Heat mat or heat wave lamp? Also Calcium quest
i don't keep geckos so I can't answer the heat question, but I do keep crickets so I can answer that.
My answer is neither. I feed my crickets scraps of veggies and fruits and supply a wet sponge for water. I dust my crickets once a week with calcium plus D powder to feed my frogs. Too much calcium in a crickets diet will kill a cricket so I choose to dust with vitamins and calcium instead. Remember, whatever your crickets eat is what your critter eats. I can't imagine eating any of the gel cricket food myself.

Re: Heat mat or heat wave lamp? Also Calcium quest
Heat mats are better or you can use a regular human heat pad. You need to keep a bowl of calcium in the leo tank at all times and just dust the crickets with vitamins a couple times a week. You can gutload the crickets with fruits and veggies.
