Tank size? (I've got a few other questions)

I've got a few questions, that I have not been able to find answers to online or in reptile books. I'm planning on getting a gecko within a few months, this will be my first reptile. I'm excited and nervous; I want to be sure I can provide the right environment for my new little guy or girl.

I have a 40 gallon breeder tank, is that too large for a single male gecko? Would two females be better for that size tank?

Do female geckos lay eggs whether they are fertile or not? I've been reading about egg binding in reptiles. Has anybody had problems with their females getting egg bound?

On average (depending on age), how many crickets and mealworms per week do geckos eat?

Thank you for any help you can offer.

Re: Tank size? (I've got a few other questions)

A 40g will be too big for a baby, but you could block off half of the cage temporarily or permanently (and even have a gecko in each side.)

Female geckos don't generally produce eggs unless they have been with a male, and if you have a good moist hide set up even if they do produce eggs you shouldn't have to worry about egg binding.

As far as how much my guys eat I couldn't tell you, I buy them 1000 at a time and divide them between 3 geckos, 2 blue tongued skinks, 1 toad and 1 bearded dragon.

Re: Tank size? (I've got a few other questions)

my leopard can eat up to around 5 to 10 a day, sometimes he wants more sometimes he want less, i guess it all depends on their mood.

A 40 gallon would be great for a single leo or 2 Leopard Geckos. As hatchlings though, they do thrive better in smaller enclosures. The main reason for this is because in larger enclosures, hatchlings will move around the enclosure and can end up on the cool side of the tank. While that doesn't sound like too much of an issue, it is when the little guy is now to afraid to venture back out and head back to the warmer side. (pending they remember where it was to begin with.) It is also harder for them to catch their prey in larger enclosures.

As adults however, they will love the space and hides to explore at night.

No.

This will depend on the leo. I personally leave a dish of mealies in with my Leopard Geckos all the time. I offer around 5 crickets per hatchling per day as well. It is also a good idea to toss in a small piece of carrot for the crickets if they are going to be in with the leo for any amount of time.

Since the hatchlings are skittish, I have found that leaving them with the crickets for a few hours tend to give them the time to catch them without fear of me catching them. lol The carrot will typically cause the crickets to keep to that area and prevent them from nipping on the leo. Even though Leopard Geckos are nocturnal, I tend to feed the crickets in the afternoon so I can remove them before I go to bed. I don't feel comfortble leaving crickets in overnight.

A 3 ft LONG tank would work, yes.
