My daughter and myself are learning about leopard geckos. She is turning 10 soon and has saved up money to BUY her first pet. She has several pets and takes extremely good care of them, and now she wants a leopard gecko. I want to make sure we get a healthy gecko, but I was wondering where is a good place to get her one. She wanted a Tokay gecko, but I told her no because I read up that they bite. So, we decided on a leopard gecko. I'm reading up on the care sheet provided in a different thread but any other advise would be greatly appreciated.

where are you located? I would look for any local reptile shows, that way breeders come to you. Try to stay away from chain stores, those reptiles are plagued with problems.

Welcome to HC. You can also try rescues that may have some for adoption. Just fyi...even leopard geckos can bite, lol

Oh great... does it hurt if they bite? she's a pretty tuff kid I just don't know too much about them yet.

california is kinda big, can you narrow it down? Southern, Middle, Northern?

you can also do a google for local reptile/pet stores. Get one that has been captive bred.

It probably will hurt - but no more than if a hamster bit you. They're pretty small animals. A bite may draw a little blood, but isn't likely to do any real damage. A skinned knee would probably be worse than a leopard gecko bite.

The thing would be to very carefully disinfect the wound, because reptiles do carry a lot of bacteria.

However, Leopard Geckos tend to have much sweeter dispositions than a tokay. If they are well taken care of and handled properly, they usually don't bite.
