New to this

hello

my name is jenn and im new this. I was thinking about buying a leo gecko for my son as a pet of course he would be watched and I would care for it. Basically something he could interact with he's 2 1/2yrs old. He is gentle, for I know u have to becareful with their tails and just them in general. He would never be allowed to handle it on his own either way. So its basically for myself and his pleasure too. I dont know anything about reptiles i've never had any. I just have a question about biting, i read some where as adults they can bite and draw blood. Is this true? are they biters or does it depend? can they be tamed from young? any advice would be great thanks alot!

Re: New to this

Hello and welcome to HC. Leopard Geckos are wonderful lizards, I've kept them for years and have never been bitten. Research well prior to your purchase and as you stated, a 2 1/2 year old will surely need constant supervision while interacting with your new pet.

Re: New to this

I have one who bites me on a daily basis and i've had 4 others who wouldn't bite me no matter what.
In the defense of the biter he is severely crippled, mostly blind, and it pains him every time I have to handle him. I think he just strikes at anything that moves in the hope that it is food. He's very small and has rubber jaw so getting bitten isn't an ordeal, just an annoyance.

Leopard geckos, bearded dragons, blue tongued skinks, and corn snakes all seem to be very good starter pets, Bearded Dragons and blueys are larger so they usually are easier to interact with and are less delicate, but they can also bite harder.

Re: New to this

Agree with Lacey. The leopard geckos my daughters friend has have been extensively worked with to be hand tame, and her younger brothers (3 and 5)do well with them with lots of supervision. Do your research, have fun!

Re: New to this

if an adult sized gecko were to bite you, is it painful or it doesnt really hurt? cause I heard they can make u bleed, adults at least.

Re: New to this

Welcome to HC!
It's a bit difficult to answer your question: Anything with a mouth can/and under the right (wrong) circumstances WILL bite. Depending on how hard they clamp down, they may draw blood.
As far as pain, I suppose it depends on how pain sensitive you are. And pain and bleeding don't necessarily go hand in hand.
I'm a snake person and my snakes have two rows of tiny razor sharp teeth on the top jaw and a row of tiny razor sharp teeth on the bottom. A good bite will leave me with up to 10 little pin-holes that bleed like crazy BUT they don't hurt half as bad as a papercut.
Generally the surprise of getting bit is worse than the bite itself. It's not poisonous and much much much safer than a cat bite -- those usually don't bleed and cause seriously dangerous infections.
I hope that helps.
Good luck with your decision!

Re: New to this

HI and WElcome.....good luck in your quest for a leopard gecko...definitely constant supervision with him, and watch the tail...maybe an older already tamed lizard would be an idea.....I have taken in a few that were great to be handled....again good luck..
