Re: Thinking about a leo
Not really, the only time you would soak them is if they have impaction.

Re: Thinking about a leo
Hello,
If you are considering the purchase of a leo, you should take the time to read every section of this caresheet. http://reptileguides.herpcenter.com/...122.html?t=122 Just about every question you could have should be answered in there. Not to mention it will give you the complete rundown on their care. After reading that, should you have any questions pertaining to their care, please post them and I will make it a point to add it to the revised version of that caresheet that I have been working on. |

Re: Thinking about a leo
also, when I do get one. I was planning on hand feeding it, or feeding it outside of its enclosure. If I did this, do you think it would be ok to use sand as a substrate, not calci-sand. just really fine sand. I want to set it up in a desert-like vivarium

Not as a juvenile. Some keep adults on it but I wouldn't. They lick everything not just food.

Re: Thinking about a leo
Sand isn't really that natural, for a desert terrarium you could look into a sand/clay mix that gets hard enough that they aren't eating it and add some large flat rocks.
Sand can look 'cool' but I haven't been happier about my cages since I quit using it. It's messy and fills the water dishes and spills everywhere and is hard to clean. I'm thinking i'm much better off without it. |

Re: Thinking about a leo
Hello,
Most people confuse desert vivaria with sand. Sand doesn't constitute a desert. A desert simply means that there is a lack of regular water supply. A desert could have a solid rock terrain, random grasses, and even a dry soil mix of sorts. The plants, mainly succulents and cacti are what truly make the desert vivarium what it is. They are designed to require very little water and yet still thrive. You could create a repticarpet based flooring and use potted succulents to create a beautiful vivarium and there will be no risk of impaction at all. I haven't started it yet, but I have a few enclosure plans I am writing up that address this very topic and will explain in detail how to create some stunning enclosures without the use of particulates, but still display the natural look people enjoy viewing. I should have at least one of them done in the next month or 2. ![]() |
