overfeeding?

All the books & caresheets say that Leopard Geckos should be fed every other day, but my guys are perfectly content to eat every day. As gauged by comparing them to other leo pics on this site, they don't seem to be overweight. They eat 2 superworms each daily, dusted every other day. I occasionally can get the smaller one to eat a cricket, but the bigger one is patently uninterested.

So, my question is: What would be the signs and consequences of overfeeding?

Re: overfeeding?

Usually babies are fed daily and adults can go everyother day. If you limit how much they take daily then you should not have an issue.

Re: overfeeding?

This is probably a dumb question, but will Leopard Geckos stop eating when they're full, or do they just keep eating anything they receive?

Because I'd tend to think if they ate only when they were hungry and only until they were full, feeding them every day if they want it wouldn't hurt them.

Re: overfeeding?

I feed mine daily. In fact, all of my leo enclosures have a constant food supply in them. I have never seen an "obese" leo. Some of my Leopard Geckos, even with constant food, are not as large as some of the others. I do believe they stop eating when they are full.

In nature, if they don't want to eat, they simply just don't hunt. I can't see or understand why that would be any different in captivity. Its not like the insects aren't there to hunt in the wild. lol

Leopard geckos can get what are called "fatty pockets" behind their front limbs. Its a small blister appearing thing.

The feeding every other day notion won't hurt a leo if that is what you are concerned about. Adults can eat every other day if that is the path you would like to take. For me though, its daily feedings.

Re: overfeeding?

I feed my leo daily. If she is not interested she just turns her head and walks away.

Re: overfeeding?

I also have a baby that eats quite a bit - I keep a constant supply of mealworms in a dish and supplement with some crickets daily. He's a pretty avid eater - 6+ crickets (.25") ususally!

From what I've read, if they are "obese" it comes from too many wax or silk worms - which are really fatty - and they'll be sluggish and lazy.

Re: overfeeding?

Silk worms I dont believe are fatty and are much healthier than crickets. They can also be used as a staple.
