Question about water

Is there any information on tap water being a problem for leopard geckos? I have searched and not seen anything. This is probably a wierd question but here is why I ask: I have several hermit crabs and there is evidence that the chlorine and flouride in tap water is harmful to them. I have to use a fish type of water dechlorinator for their water. Should I use it for the lizards also? Has anyone heard of this?

Re: Question about water

Many reptile keepers use straight tap water, I for one do not. I buy Repti-safe which declorinates and removes other items from the water. A small 5 dollar bottle has lasted almost a year,,,,not bad considering all the herps I use it for. Better safe than sorry, more so for taking preventive measures that cost so little.

Re: Question about water

I'm with Marsha, if I drink it (and I actually really enjoy it) then that's what the lizards get.
I wouldn't want to spoil them by offering them Evian or something

Re: Question about water

A good rule of thumb is that if you can drink it, so can your pets.

That said, the tap water is terrible where I live. It's so full of chemicals that I'm sure it's pretty harmful to drink - to the point where they sent us all a letter saying not to worry about the extra chlorine they just added, because it's simply killing off some extra "harmless" bacteria. (Which of course means it's probably radioactive or something.)

If your water is like that, you probably have a filter somewhere in your house, or you drink some kind of bottled or distilled water. Just give them whatever you drink. Or if it's too expensive, boiling the water and letting it cool will probably make it safe for them.
