strange leopard gecko behaviour

I have 3 leopard geckos. I just recently changed the substrate in the cage a few days ago. while everything seemed normal yesterday when I fed them, 24 hours later it seems that all the sand has been piled up in the middle of the cage. Everything seems to have been moved as they dug under it. Is this normal, are my geckos just bored, was one pregnant and I didn't know about it, or is something wrong. I am not sure If I should move things back because say, they might have eggs underneath there that I dont know about (it is not likely).

help!!!

Has this happened to anyone else

Re: strange leopard gecko behaviour

Hello,

What did you have them on before the sand? If it wasn't a granular substrate, I would say yes. The only time I have seen my leopard geckos pile any type of substrate is when they are depositing eggs in their moist hides. Beyond the moist hide, there is nothing in the enclosure that allows for digging or ingesting.

Quote:
Granular substrates have been known to cause impactions in leopard geckos. There are two types of impaction that could occur. The first is called an Acute Impaction. An acute impaction is when the Leo swallows a large amount of substrate and it blocks the vital organs used to process food. (Stomach, intestinal tract, etc.) The results of this type of impaction will lead to lethargy, lack of appetite, lack of bowel movements, sand in the stool, etc.

The other type of impaction, and often the most deadly form, is the chronic impaction. A chronic impaction is the slow accumulation of sand that binds to the lining of the intestinal tract. Over time, and often years, it will create a blockage. This blockage will also have the same detrimental effects as an acute impaction. The biggest problem with this type of impaction is that when it is discovered, it is most often too late to cure.

To prevent the possibility of this happening to your leopard gecko, avoid all granular substrates. None of them is as digestible as they claim and each poses the CHANCE that your gecko could become a victim of an impaction.
If the sand you are using is calci-sand, you should read this:

Re: strange leopard gecko behaviour

It was eggs. I started to move the pile, and somehow (without anyone looking the slightest pregnant) they have attached two eggs to the side of the waterdish (which they buried). It seems to be moist and protected, which is good because I cannot seem to unattach the eggs. Any suggestions

Re: strange leopard gecko behaviour

To remove the eggs, I would moisten them a bit. Then I would empty the tank of the sand, use something more natural for the Leopard Geckos like slate or another large stone, and add a moist hide.

I have a moist hide, they just don't seem to like to use it for anything but hiding. Do you have any tips for keeping eggs?
