Re: New, Rescued "Eublepharis macularius"

Hello,

By my standard, that isn't enough. I leave a dish of mealies in all my leo enclosures at all times. They can eat as they see fit. When I supplement the feeders with waxies, butters, supers,or crickets, I normally toss in 10 at a whack. What isn't eaten I remove in a few hours. (I normally just leave the worms in there until they have all been eaten. I remove the crickets though.)

Most of my Leopard Geckos eat in excess of 10-15 insects, per day!

OK, I'll offer more than 4 and see how he likes it.

Re: New, Rescued "Eublepharis macularius"

Healthy leopard geckos will not over eat. I have always offered a shallow dish of mealies and my leopard geckos aren't over weight.

I just grabbed moose (his enclosure is beside my desk). This picture is less than 2 minutes old. lol

He doesn't look fat to me. I haven't weighed him in awhile as I didn't breed this year. He falls between the 75-90 gram margin though.

UPDATE: I decided to weigh him to see just where he is right now. Moose weighs in at an even 80grams. I also weighed a leo I recently got from lacey. She weighs in at an even 75 grams.

Aww Moose is cute.

I let my geckos eat as much as they want too, they definitely don't break the scale when they stand on it either.

Re: New, Rescued "Eublepharis macularius"

Hello,

I always allow my Leopard Geckos to eat as much as they wish. This is especially true for my breeding females.

I have a few Leopard Geckos that dont eat as much as the others, and they maintain in the 50-60 gram range and choose to eat every other day. They have food though 24/7.

Its my belief that Leopard Geckos that DO over eat are doing so to compensate for a lack of nutrients. I am partial to believing its calcium they seek as its a crucial part of their diet.

All of my Leopard Geckos have a calcium dish in their enclosures. I use Rep-Cal Phosphorus free with D3, Ultra fine (pink label). I also use the Rep-Cal phosphorus free with D3, original powder for my dragons (white label).

I believe that since they have a constant supply of the nutrient they require the most, they have no reason to over eat to compensate. This has been my experience anyways.

Re: New, Rescued "Eublepharis macularius"

Well, the new leo has been eating 5-6 prey items for the past few days. If I offer more than that, he ignores the prey item. Maybe he just needs to slowly become accustomed to having more prey items in a feeding session. He might not be eating as much as your Leopard Geckos Rich, but this may be a result of not having very much food when he was with his previous owner. His appetite will probably increase in time.

Re: New, Rescued "Eublepharis macularius"

When I bought my first leo the pet store told me they only eat ONCE PER WEEK!!! I offer Ducky food every day, some days she totally pigs out other days she may only eat a few mealies. But I always offer food daily. I tried to leave a dish of mealies in her tank but she will not eat them out of the dish.

Re: New, Rescued "Eublepharis macularius"

Wow, what kind of pet store was that?! I hope you went back and informed them of their error. I'm just starting a meal worm colony so when it's ready I'll be feeding those in addition to the prey items that I've got him on know.

It is the same pet store that sold me an extremely malnaurished leo baby. Stupid me didn't know any better at the time, believed them when they told me it was just baby and was supposed to be so skinny. She ended up dying.

I did go back and confront them about the sick leo and the feeding issue. The store manager at first couldn't believe that one of his employees told me that but then turned around and defended his employee.

So needless to say I don't go there any more and try to get any info I need from this site.

Re: New, Rescued "Eublepharis macularius"

Good for you! At least this site is more helpful than some uneducated employee of a pet store.
