Re: can leos burrow?

I dont believe Leopard Geckos burrow, but some people make man made tunnels to use like hides for them.

Re: can leos burrow?

so will it be okay to get a clay substrate so I could make a man made burrow? Or should I just stay with play sand?

Um, play sand is usually not recommended. I use indoor/outdoor carpet for mine. I'm not sure what you mean by clay substrate though; could you explain?

Re: can leos burrow?

it is a clay like "sand" if you would, it is used for lizards that like to burrow as their natural habitat. go on to your local pet store web site and look up the types of substrate their is and you might find it their.

My other question is how do you set up your leo's cage up, because I am getting a different tank, 36"x10"x10" i believe, so pretty much a 20 gallon long and I would like to set this cage up different then the one I have now

Re: can leos burrow?

I leopard gecko did sort of burrow when laying her eggs, she dug under her water dish and squezed her self under it where she stayed and layed her eggs.

Re: can leos burrow?

The Short answer; Yes They burrow.

A sand clay mix substrate is good for leo's we've used it and find it perfect for all our savannah reptiles. The only down side is the weight when it's filled to a good height for burrowing and how it does become really hard so compeate substrate changes are a pain. We've found that most our animals will only burrow starting under somthing ie. a rock or flat peace of corkbark. but the burrow will go as deep and far as the cage lets it. Play sand can be used but I would as a clay compont to is to make it stable. the trouble with sand alone is the possiblity of ingestion.
