Newbie to forum with a question
Hey everybody. I've had my leo for over a year and he's great. The last couple of weeks he's been having problems with shedding so I've increased the humidity. The other day he still had shed on his entire face, covering his eyes and mouth so I carefully moistened a cotton ball and allowed the water to soak over his face until the shed came off. However, I freaked because the entire outline of his eye also came off and I hoped that was all it was.
He's been having problems with that eye for about a week before. I've noticed that he kinda squints but after removing the shed he's been licking it alot. Also, it lacks that brightness that his other eye has and he can't see out of it. I have to place the food right in front of his good eye. The last couple of days I've had to give him wax worms because they're bigger and slower and he eats them easier. Anyone know what this could be? I didn't blind my guy did I? Leo's don't have eyecaps like snakes do they? Besides, I don't see anything on his eye ... it's just kinda dull looking. Other than that, he seems the same. Thanks SHoff |

Re: Newbie to forum with a question
Welcome to the forum. Unfortuantely we aren't vets and can't really give you a diagnosis without having seen what you are talking about. With eye issues time is of the essence and I would strongly urge you to have a vet look at it, even if it is just for peace of mind.
If you need help finding a vet check out these sites: Herp Vet Connection ARAV Does your leo have a humid hide and plenty of things to scratch his shed off with? What is his set up like, what is his flooring and things like that, it will help us try to determine if there are any enviromental things that may be effecting him. Best of luck, and again, welcome.

Re: Newbie to forum with a question
Hello,
Welcome to the HC Network. Does the eye appear to be clouded? I would have to agree with Lacey on this one. If the eye was damaged, a vet would need to confirm this. |

Re: Newbie to forum with a question
Thanks you guys for the great welcomes.
My leo looks perfectly fine. His eye is not clouded, red or puffy. Except, honestly, it almost looks like he doesn't even have an eye. I've looked closer and can make out the iris but the eye just looks dark. Right now he's keeping to his hide. I purchased a spray to help him with his sheds for awhile and reptile drops in case the eye is just irritated. But, the eye just plain looks weird. Not infected I don't think. I've checked for any leftover shed and can't see any. Guess, I'll wait a few days to see if there's any improvement. I'll keep you posted and please, again if anyone has heard of anything similar to this let me know!! |

Re: Newbie to forum with a question
I would take him to a vet asap
he may have an eye infection-which is commonly caused by stuck shed around the eye area Since vision is a very important component in their hunting-you will want to get this looked at as soon as you can so that it does not lead to permanent blindness Your vet may give you prescription eye drops and an oral antibiotic to help with this problem Good Luck at the vets ![]() |
