Handling your leo

Do you all try to hold or handle your leo's in any way? I tried to pick up my leo and she gets really mad . She starts swinging her tale real slow and has actually tried to bite me (I think, at least it seemed that way). She gets very agitated with me. The only times I try to pick her up is when I totally clean her cage once a week and I need to put her somwhere else while I clean. Usually what I do is wait until she goes into her moist hide and I just pick it up with her in it. I would like to hold just to look at her but that is not something she wants me to do!

I handled mine all the time. How are you going about trying to pick it up? If you are going in straight from above, s/he may feel you are a predator which is why they are trying to bite or attack. I would suggest coming from in front of it and scooping up. If you are scared of being bit, use a glove or hand towel. Once you start training them to be picked up, you should have any issues unless you startle it.

Okay, I will keep working with her. I do try to scoop her up from the front. I wasn't sure if it was okay to handle her alot. As for the biting I am not worried, I don't think she would hurt me. I have been bitten by bigger animal than her! And they had teeth.

Lay one hand flat and gently use the other hand to coax the leo into your other hand. Just let it walk around on your hand and arm, dont try to grab or restrain it..

My Leopard Geckos are very sweet and love to be handled. When I talk to them, they look up to see where my voice is coming from, and when I put my hand in the tank, they walk onto it and climb up my arm. But I got them as adults, and they were already accustomed to lots of handling. I agree with the advice to try letting yours get used to your hand in the tank first, and don't even try to pick her up, then gradually work your way to scooping her up.

my Leopard Geckos soon got used to my hand being in the tank, if there was things needed doing like water changes ect, I never picked them up unless it was really necessary, they eventually would just climb on my hand whenever I put my hand in the cage even if it was just a water change they wanted out lol.

Just be patient she will get used to you eventually, its building trust with her that your not going to eat her when you go to get her, slide your hand in the cage gently and hold it flat, dont go flying in with your hand zooming over head you will frighten her.

The younger female my son has will let my son hold her. She is just fast and she got dropped once because of this. He was very upset about it, but she is fine since. The older male is mellow. He will crawl over when you set him down then not move. He is trying to make a point of holding them at least once a day so they stay friendly.
