Oatmeal as substrate

I know that everyone has their mind set. Ok so sand/calci sand can impact. But I am sick of the crickets getting under the paper almost immediately, so I saw a friend who uses oatmeal as substrate for his bearded dragons and I wonder if this is ok for Leopard Geckos. Also, do crickets burrow in the oatmeal? I know worms do, but crix?

Oatmeal + water would be bad. This whole sand thing is blown over the top. Leopard Geckos that are older than a year can be placed on sand. Not calci sand, just sand. I would stay away from the oatmeal.

LOL-I bet those Bearded Dragons have a blast playing in that oatmeal but I do agree that oatmeal and water=one big mess

Tile or slate are good alternatives to paper towels and play sand for adult leopard geckos can be used -I personally prefer not to risk it
just my 2 cents

I would also advise against using the oatmeal. A little moisture and you have,..oatmeal!
Let it sit for a bit and you will have a wonderful culture going of fungus, mold, and bacteria!
Yuck!

Oatmeal expends, as well. Dry oatmeal + small internals + moisture = something not good.

Good point Zane. The same problem as with rice.

I don't like the paper towel and I only use it with my sick gecko, but I use carpet and cut it to the size of the tank and the crickets do not get underneath of the carpet. And I just asked my boyfriend and home depot only sells play sand for 1 dollar. Is this okay with adults for you advid reptile keepers. I am looking to put females and males about 65 grams on play sand. Thanks and hope this helps you replover

You don't have to poor water on it but you are suppose to keep the tank semi humid and in doing so the oatmeal might get wet or when he or she plays in the water and when she swallows it.
