Hi Hippe05-I don't consider that an amateur question at all and I would be happy to share my basic care for these guys
Over the past 10 years I have been experimenting with feeding different insects at different stages of their life I have found that meal worms left 24/7 in a dish in the babies tank works great I also feed babies crickets every other day Juvies and Adults get super worms and crickets and the occasional roach I have found that super worms for geckos over 30 grams really puts the weight on them I do NOT feed pinky's to any of my leopard geckos I have never found it to be necessary I have also been experimenting with different homemade gut loads over the years While genetics does play a large part in size and I do have many Giants-I strongly believe that properly gut loaded insects makes the difference between a skinny Leo and a fat one and keeping stress levels to a mimimum also plays a major part in their growth I have many non-giant leopard geckos that are very large and I believe that all of the above mentioned factors contribute to their size and weight Also keeping on top of parasitic infestation (usually transferred by crickets) helps with keeping healthy geckos and they don't usually lose weight when they are parasite free Keeping stress to a minimum is very important and I have never used any overhead/direct lighting on my leopard geckos tanks and those in tubs seem to do even better than those that I have kept in aquariums Leopard Geckos like it dark during the day and ambient room lighting is more than adequate for their needs I also keep my Leopard Geckos alone with the exception of a few females that do well together and I monitor those very closely for dominance issues I also do not handle my Leopard Geckos except to weigh and move them when I am doing a complete clean-out on a tank/tub and of course when I am taking their pics-lol That's about all that I do or don't do for them Some people might actually consider my Leopard Geckos too fat but I like them just the way that they are Thank you everyone for all of your very kind words about my geckos Sandy |
