I would get rid of the sand and go to a more safer substrate. We use paper towels or newspaper. What is your moist hide made of ?? we use an inverted coolwhip container with lid, a hole cut @ 1/4 inch from the bottom for access, and @ 1/2 inch of damp moss (sphagnum). It stays moist all the time and our Leopard Geckos use it pretty much only to shed

This is just an fyi for all members:
In a lab study of sand substrates the best digestion rate was only 30%. So even though the manufacturers claim it to be safe it can still cause impactions. |

I use papertowels mostly on my Leopard Geckos. But some other great looking substrates that are safe are slate and slate pieces without sharp edges to form cave like hides... Misting a leo in an enclosure with sand or even misting a leo out of the enclosure and putting it in before it has dried, usually will cause problems with shedding they're feet and toes properly. Other things could be irritation, rubbing against toes and forming rashes. you get the picture. It's not good. It's always better to be 100 percent safe than 90 or less.

Yeah, Leopard Geckos don't even come from sandy areas in the wild, so its not a whole lot different than using sand for something like an anole, which is a more obvious mistake. Slate and/or clay work much better and better simulate their natural rocky environment. Switching your substrate will solve more than just your shedding problem.

all of my Leopard Geckos are happy to use they're humid hides.
first off, if you want to use sand in your enclosure, then so be it. i don't use it(or recommend it,) and I know of the research about impaction and such, but I know that there are a lot of people out there who swear by it. that said, about your leo shedding: don't spray the gecko. it is not necessary for their survival like it is an anole or chameleon. if your leo is shedding, let it shed. let it use the humid hide if it wants. my humid hides have moist paper towel in them. i just make sure that it doesn't dry up and I change them regularly so they don't mildew. if your leo has trouble shedding on its own (unshed skin around toes and such,) then I would suggest putting some shallow warm water in a container and soaking your gex for like 10-15 minutes. that should help loosen the skin so they can get it off themselves. good luck, lola |
