moist hide & feeding ?'s

I created the moist hide from the directions here on this site. I have a question about it....

I used paper towels in the hide as the pet store didn't have any of the correct moss. I dampened the towels and there was no water evident in the hide. This morning there was a bit of condensation on the top of the hide (I used a plastic sandwich container as suggested). Is this okay? Will that be too wet in there for the leo gecko?

As for feeding..

Do I feed her every day? I feed her as soon as we got her home last night. She ate two crickets. I also gave her three more this morning. I know that it said on the caresheet to feed in the evening, but I wanted to make sure that she was going to take the crickets and I wasn't real sure when the pet store feed her last, as they are the ones that said they only feed 1-2 per week.

Also, should I give her a combo of crickets and mealies? Or do I save the mealies as a treat? I saw in the caresheet about waxworms every two weeks as a supplement.

As long as you removed the excess water, condensation is normal. You will need to check it every couple of days to moisten.

For feeding, since she is young, you can offer food daily and she may or may not eat. Most eat everyother day. Mixing up crixs and mealies is fine and either can be used as a staple. The waxworms would be more of a treat as you stated.

Hello,

As stated, the condensation is fine. In fact, it helps to keep the papertowel moister for a longer duration. (It eventually drops back down.)

I keep mealies in a shallow dish with my Leopard Geckos 24-7. They can eat them whenever they wish. I find that they have no problems deciding which they want and when. They will readily take crickets, butterworms, waxworms, etc. whenever I toss them in even if they have a full dish of mealies.

Keep a slice of carrot or potatoe in with the mealies. It will keep them hydrated, gutloaded, and in the dish. lol

For the shagnum moss, try your local garden center. It is used in a variety of ways for plants. What you want is the long fibered type not the milled type. It will also hold moisture longer than the paper towel.

I have also found moss at the flower section of Walmart. I looked in the Dollar Tree and did not find any. They do have a lot of plastic plants if you need them. I also get shells there for my hermit crabs.

I was not to impressed with the moss from the petstore. It was also pricey.

that's something to think about. It would need to be rid of all bacteria/salt water.

I use oragnic sphagnum moss in all my moist hides (smaller ones of course get papertowels) but it's AWESOME for holding moisture.

I got it at lowes, but I'm sure wal-mart has it.

Coco hummus (I think you sell it as Bed-a-beast) is also an excellent medium for the moist hide. My Leopard Geckos will dig or move it around if they want more humid or dry.
