Dropped Tail

In May of last year we purchased two baby Leopard Geckos for my son's birthday. "Spot", a regular and "Ice" a blizzard. My son has been amazing at taking care of them but it became obvious right away that Spot was not healthy, numerous vet visits and copious amounts of medication and extra care did not prevent her from dying only a couple months later. This has made Ice even more special to us but unfortunately we had an accident and Ice has lost her tail. I've read various info on the situation and here's what we've done so far. We've switched her to butter worms for the first week or so to prevent crickets from bugging her and too fatten her up. We've diligently applied polysporin to the tail every day. Now we wait. Is there anything else that we should be doing for her? How long does it take for the tail to begin growing back? How long till it's done growing?

Hummm... I was under the impression you shouldn't apply anything on the tail unless really necessary because that might compromise the growth of the new one. But don't take my word, never been through that situation.

Hello,

A Leopard Geckos tail is designed to break. There really isn't any need to add anything. The best thing you can do is just keep the enclosure clean. You don't even need to change the diet if the leo was healthy. Just offer the regulars with a few extra treats.

The tail will take a while to regenerate but should start "closing" in a couple weeks. (Noticeably. It has already started healing.)

The tail will never look like the original. It will close and bubble out a little. Basically, it will have a "bulb" on the end.

I would keep it on papertowels and wouldn't add anything to it.

Poor thing how did that happen?

Thanks for all of the input. I have to admit Ice seems much less concerned about the whole situation than we have been. She lost her tail when my son tripped while carrying her . . . total accident, he was doing everything we had taught him to but her tail got pinched in the fall. As for the diet . . . we had read that the crickets would be attracted to the wound and God knows she loves worms so we figured we'd make the switch for a little while. She's getting both now. I am actually amazed how quickly the wound has been healing . . . it was just over a week after the incident that those pictures were taken. Looks even better now. Anyone know how long it takes for the tail to grow back?

Your probably right about it not bothering her. I think sometimes we are more stressed about what goes on with our reptiles then they are.

Good to hear she is doing well, keep us posted.
