when can a leo start eating large crickets?
ok, so Sunshine has gotten so big. She is about the size of my hand. I can't beleive how fast she grew.
I have been feeding her small crickets and the medium mealworms...but at petsmart they are too tiny. I hae a hard time finding them in the container... anyway, I was wanting to try bigger foods, but I am afraid to lol. I don't want her to choke or something. I will get a recent pic of her if needed...well I plan to soon anyways when I get her new set up done. I feed my newt large crickets and she is pretty much the same size. I thought the food had to be around the size that is between the eyes. I read that somewhere, but I think it was mainly for juvs. So I was just checking first before I tried it. I still have to feed her the rest of the small crickets I am gut loading. |

Yep, the general rule is no bigger than between her eyes, but if you could post a pic that would be great. Sounds like shes big enough for bigger crickets and to switch from mealies to supers.

ok good!
now I don't have to get two different kinds anymore lol BUT that leads me to my next question. About supers and giant mealworms ~ the giant mealworms that are sold at petsmart...I thought I read somewhere they are genetically altered to become so big and never grow into the beetle. However, I have fed them to my Tokay and they do change into some sort of thing that wiggles...looks like a prebeetle ?? Plus, I didn't know if they were safe to feed. I can't remember where I read this..probably here??? I was going to do the super mealworm, but they can bite right? I don't know if I want to do that lol! Are there anything else I can try that is similar? Those mediums I have been getting are SO TINY I can even find them well most of them! It is horrible! Plus>>>pics will be coming soon =) I am dying to get this Under Tank Heater so I can put her in her NEW 20 LONG =)~ I got a great deal on it from ebay..a 30-40 gal for like 20 bucks!! counting shipping! You can't get a 15-20 for that! The down side I am still waiting *sigh* but at least if gives the silicone seal time to air out..so I must look at the bright side of things! |

Hello,
You can order silkworms online, which are the best feeder insect you can offer. Superworms can bite, but the odds of it getting your leo is pretty slim. They don't eat meat. They eat granular foods like oat and barley. They are pretty much like mealworms, which coincidentally have the same ability to bite, except their exoskeleton is slightly softer. |

You can also order mealies online, also if there is a bait shop close to you sometimes they sell mealies that are differnt sizes. I have a bait machine right up from my house so I just buy out the machine and store about 20-25 cups of mealies in my fridge. Yea cups not just 20-30 mealies cups full of 30 mealies haha. It's just cheaper that way I think. I also had to do that because the large mealies at my petsmart or petco are really small actually! Good luck!

Why not just raise your own mealies. Its incredibly easy and cheap.
Several of us do it and there is an instruction sheet in the articles section

Thanks for the info everyone! I don't know why I don't keep them...I really should...maybe I'll give it a try. I wouldlike to try silkworms if they are the best to feed at least I can give them to my lizards on occasion.
Here she is ![]() She has grew a bunch! I gave her the smallest large I had and she ate it without any problems. I think she was bored with the smalls lol Here she is before she gobbled it up! ![]() ![]() She ate it so fast I couldn't get the pic of her chewing ha ha I am posting her new cage in another post so check it out SHE LOVES IT! I am so happy with it! I just have to get the temps right again. I have it good now, but I am keeping an eye on it incase it gts too hot or whatever...I might need to make adjustments. |

Just be sure you give it some time to run to make sure all the temps are fine before you move her into it.
