sounds and hides
My son wants to know if they are nocturnal will the Leo keep him awake making noises?
I read to have a hide on each side of the tank. Then there is mentioned a hide for shedding that is kept moist (moss etc.) is this a third hide or one of the other two?

I know there are others with more advice, but I have a third moist hide and then two hides on each side for mine. I think my Sunshine is outgrowing hers so I would say get hides with room to grow =) I use dampened paper towels right now though in the moist hide.
As for noise, mine doesn't really make loud noises unlike my Tokay. I have heard her make sounds when I hold her...like when she doesn't want to be bothered I assume (she really doesn't like to be held when she is getting ready to shed) I figured that out recently cause I was cleaning her cage and she wasn't happy with me. lol she is such a cutie!
good luck!

I have never heard our gecko at night and we have 6 of them. They are ground dwellers so all they do is walk around their enclosures at night. As for hides we only have two in our enclosures, one on the warm side and on the cool side we have a moist hide. Here is the link to HC's article on how to make moist hides. It is really easy, even I can make them. http://www.herpcenter.com/showthread.php?t=7193

I have had several also and never heard them at night. I also have a warm hide and a moist hide on the cool side. I dont see the necessity for 3 unless you house multiple geckos together.

Like everyone said, no, your son shouldn't be disturbed by them. Small babies (first 3 weeks) are really vocal. Apart from that only fear, fight and mating disturb them enough to make a sound.
It's a third hide. I have mine in the middle of the enclosure. Some of my Leopard Geckos spend all their time in there and others visit it on occasion.

I agree your son will not hear them unless spooked or mating in some way, or just doesn't wan to be bothered. I only have ever heard my gecko once and that was cause she didn't want to be held. Also I would go with two hides and 3 if you are housing more I just think it's unnecessary!

I made a moist hide from one of those grocery store reusable ham containers. It has been through the dishwasher several times already. I used a box cutter to start the hole then finished it with scissors. Does the edge need to smooth the edges? He bought a good size half log with his Xmas money.

Is the ham container metal or plastic? The edges should be smooth so the leo doesnt injure himself going in and out.

I've heard my gecko at night, butonlybecause I was awake already from my frogs..and she thinks shes a tokay so she tries to climb and spends alot of time rustling and scratching and such...not enough to wake me, but enough to hear when I am awake.

The only time if heard my gecko is durning shed, kind of thrashing around to get it off, or him scratching on his tank wanting out. The may make a clicking sound for breeding or maynot. If you just housing one in a 10 gallon, a moist hide and 2 hides on each sides, you can give him more as they love to hide and run fromone to one with out being seen.
For your moist hide, get some tape and tape around the edges to smooth them down or some sand paper. I never really smoothed mine, just made sure there wasnt any pointy pieces.
