shed name? blue phase?
I heard a couple people say that their snake was in a blue phase while they were shedding...is this just for certain snakes or is all shedding called blue...I think there's a python that turns blueish when it sheds but kings eyes turn blue just curious.

I think it goes for MOST snakes. But I heard that the Chondros don't go blue. But I dont know for sure. I know my Ball Pythons turn grey-ish and so do both my Boas.
Hope that answered your question ![]() Alex

A lot of people use the term "blue" loosely to mean any time during the shed cycle.
The shed cycle of my rainbow boas and BP tend to follow this pattern: Less activity Pink to reddish belly scales Dull coloration eventually turning almost white or blue The eyes turn blue or milky white The whole snake clears up completely Then it sheds. In general, I think the whole process is a bit uncomfortable for the snakes: my BP goes into his moss box and doesn't come out for 2 weeks. When I lift the lid to spray, he hides his head. (It's like he's feeling "blue"). Depending on the color of the snake, the actually milky blue phase is not as noticeable except on the eyes. Alex is correct: it is VERY VERY difficult to tell when a chondro is in shed. (We have 2 and it's always a bit of guess work) Usually they won't eat, and when we mist them with water, the water drops are VERY large as opposed to when they've just shed and have tiny tiney droplets on their skin. (Kind of like a just waxed car.) We also keep very detailed records and know approximately when to expect a shed based on the time between previous sheds, etc.

When something doesn't go blue...what is it not doing? Is blue referring to moody, faded looking, skin goes blueish looking, or eyes going blue? My friend has a python and mention 'blue phase' and that she doesn't think mine goes through it? But she's new to snakes so doesn't exactly know what it means. And just guessed that the skin looks blueish. I have a cali king.

I think it's just an optical illusion depending on the tint of the skin and the color of the snake.
Going blue is a process that is part of the shedding process. The body excretes a substance that helps loosen the old skin from the body. It causes the skin to look dull or blueish. A black snake may not show this as much. Chondros have whitish skin and yellow or green bodies. Perhaps, the secretion doesn't seem so obvious under the skin on these. On my rainbow boas and BP it's very obvious: ![]() Here you can really see the blue eyes: ![]() But on the chondros it's not so obvious: ![]() It happens to all of them regardless of how obvious it looks as it is an essential part of the shedding process.

The term "going into the blue" doesn't necessarily mean that the snake actually changes color to blue.
What it means is the skin tends to get dull and milky looking and the eyecaps will go milky. All snakes do this. As you get more accustomed to your snake you will start to notice it.
