biting
Every time I have a tank top or something on Joe always sees the cleavage and tries to get down my shirt. Every time he gets somewhere between my color bones and top of tank top he goes bite crazy...I was trying to get a pic of him on my neck and he went down and bit me. What is up with his obsessive hate for my boobs?! I also had a very very hard time getting him off while he was sucking and trying to rip my hand off lol. When/if you guys do get bit how do you usually get them to stop? I couldn't pry him off and tried to get mom to help but told her to stop because I was afraid she was going to pull him off to hard so I ended up running my hand under cold water until he got uncomftorable and decided he had enough.

Keep a little spritzing bottle close at hand, and keep it full of vinegar. I use vodka but that's for the bigger snakes who stand less chance of getting a respiratory problem if they get a little alcohol in their mouths. I have to admit I haven't had this issue with smaller animals (not letting go) but vinegar seems to be the way to go. Eventually it'll associate biting you with that bad taste/smell/sensation and should stop.

I really should have dewormed him while he had his mouth open!
I got some pics though=P I really like the first one not bad for a webcam pic ![]() Good ol polysporn ![]() Another thing of my ignorance I wanted to point out. I had no idea he had bottom teeth but he sure proved me wrong=P One thing I'd like to point out though for those who haven't been bitten it didn't hurt as much as it looks like it would...it was mostly pain from him pinching my skin because he has a pretty strong jaw I don't think the actual bite hurt See I never been bitten that bad before even though it wasn't bad at all because usually if you touch his jaw he lets go. I was so afraid I was going to hurt him 'cause he's so small and didn't know if actually pinching the jaw would hurt him |

How often do you feed him? The bite pic looks like a feeding response. Also how much do you feed him? maybe its time to upgrade to larger prey?? just a thought. Lyn

Getting bit really doesn't hurt, it's all sort of psychological I think. You're right, joeking. Not as bad as it sounds. Heck, I was moving a seven and a half foot boa this past weekend and he tagged me. I had no clue it even happened until I was washing up afterward and the soap stung, looked down and saw the bite line arcing across the palm of my hand. I'm still having a hard time figuring out HOW that happened as I knew she was a little cranky and was being careful so as not to upset her more than necessary.
If I had to liken it to anything, it would be like putting a post-it note on your skin and then peeling it off. Most bites I receive feel more "sticky" than anything as the snake pulls away and all those little teeth pull out. Now a lizard bite, on the other hand...that's a totally different story. One of my tree monitors laid into my girlfriend's finger over two months ago and only a week ago did the swelling and bruising finally start to go down. Insane. I can only imagine what a larger monitor could do to bare skin.

With regard to him heading down your shirt, as far as the snake is concerned it sees the shadowy cleavage as a "hole" and a place to escape into. Your grabbing him startles him and he gets defensive. I have a background on my python tank that is a photograph of a rock wall. It took forever for them to figure out that the "openings" in the picture were not accessable to them.
An aggressive bite is usually a strike and let go. A bite where it holds on is generally a feeding response. Do you have other animals that the snake may be smelling? My wifes Cal king recently did the bite and hold on bit. And according to her that type of bite DID hurt. The snake was exerting a lot of pressure on her finger. It took a dab of alcohol to get it to let go. Upon retrospect she realized that she had been handling some of our other snakes and had forgotten to wash her hands. As far as the snake was concerned it was dinner time! You were correct in being concerned about squeezing the lower jaw. you could very easily have broken the jawbones, particularly with the adrenaline flowing!

I also remember reading something years ago where a so called "snake expert" actually stated that certain perfumes can trigger agressive responses with snakes. I don't know if this is really accurate but something worth looking into.

Kenman I think your right...pretty much every time I sexy myself up in a tanktop I'm wearing the same perfume and Joe did try to bite me once when he was new and it was right on my rist (where I spray the perfume). But he wasn't trying to feed on my hand he was trying to feed on my chest which is a little to big for him. The first couple times I thought it was because of what merlin said. He'd start heading down my shirt and I'd be like ah! And try to take him out and he got frightened so he'd bite...so this time I put my hand on top of my shirt so he wouldn't fit down and he was slithering around and headed right for the bottom of the shirt and saw that he couldn't get in and still dug in. It's kind of funny as soon as he gets near the bottom of my colar bone his nose starts rubbing into me so I can tell he's going to bite but he tries to go as low as he can. I didn't move a muscle until I felt his gums just to make sure he wasn't being weird so I tried to gently pull him off so he wouldn't get freaked out and he went at my face so I pulled him back and he went for my hand and I pulled my hand back and he went for the hand he was in. I donno maybe he just doesn't like Tommy Girl? But I spray my rists and rub it under my chin so I donno...But I must say I'm not sure if you'd call it a aggressive bite. The first one definitly wasn't...he examined my skin and taisted and opened his mouth slow enough for me to gently pull him back as he was gently opening his mouth. And yeah...I can still feel the bite like somethings still pinching me but it's something that you can pretty much ignore. Unless he's like twisting his head back and forth and pinching harder like someone trying to give u a chinese burn! What does a "hungry" bite look like? And I feed him 2 fuzzys every 6 days...and no...he can't possibly eat a mouse because his middle is smaller then the fuzzys. How often should I be feeding him? Like I sad he's rediculiously small...I think it's just because when I went to the petshop to get him they told me to feed him pinkies and then fuzzys when they were big enough to eat them and I went to the pet shop to get fuzzys long ago and they gave me this huge rat fuzzy and I didn't know the difference because they said they just carried mice and I knew that wouldn't possibly fit in him...
Maybe it was because I was wearing tommy girl and he had dewormer (suppose to make him hungry)? |
