Greybanded kingsnake not eating

The grey banded kingsnake I'm taking care of decided to stop eating for the last 2-3 weeks. He has never missed a meal, despite that species being fussy sometimes. His heat pad went out, so we just got him a new one. Then we had a very high humidity wave come in, my reptile room was 70% WITHOUT spraying!! That couldn't have helped.

Despite his lack on interest in food, though he did occasionally carry it around in his mouth and move it around, he is insanely active. He is always out, always moving and is almost all the time holding his head or sometimes tail vertically along the glass or just in mid air. His temperment is the same as always, but he is never this active.

It reminds me of when blueberry went like 2 months on just baby food and wouldn't stop moving at all. He wanted a mate. I think that these snakes typically brumate before such mating occurs and he definately isn't in brumation.

Ideas?

bump. I know there's people with kingsnake experience out there.

I moved him into a less humid room that is a bit colder, but he has a heat pad he doesn't seem to use anyways. He's still moving around a whole bunch though.

Re: Greybanded kingsnake not eating

I know wild Grey Bandeds eat lizards almost exclusively, but if he has been eating mice it could be a number of diff. reasons, all of which we have read before if we have been on this site very long.

My first guess would be either he is getting ready to shed or the temps/humidity that you described aren't to his liking. I don't know when breeding season is for Grey Bandeds, but my Black Rat went off feed for a month during the spring, and I linked that to breeding season - she was really active and squirmy, as well.

Someone with more experience with that species will do a better job than me at diagnosing the situation, but there is my opinion on it. They certainly aren't your run of the mill Kingsnake.

Re: Greybanded kingsnake not eating

From What your describing it sounds like mating behavior it would help to know how old/large the snake is and what sex it is. While the behavior you descibe tends to be the females sign of wanting to mate and not the needs of male. If the snake is indeed male he may be impacted for some reason and be trying to poo. Though the kingsnakes normally need a brumation period it's not required. It's used mainly to get the male and female in the same schedule for mating though female are fertile more times during the year.
