Frog the mantid anyway. I've never posted any pics of Leapfrog anywhere before, so I figured I might as well do that. He's an immature chinese mantid (Tenodera aridifolia). He'll get upwards of 5 inches long when he's full grown, and he'll have wings by then too. He's really tame, and loves taking bugs from my hands, or trying to eat my wasps through the plastic. Like a leapfrog, he's green and can jump! Sorry, these pics are with the webcam.

Mantid butt!

I'm afraid not I wish though. I'm trying to get ahold of a few more species, but mantids are extremely hard to get now. Once I get some room cleared up, I'll probably start raising chinese mantids again, but other than them, its difficult to get other species. In the mean time, I have Frog Its fun to just let him wander around on my shelf and wall all day, he never goes anywhere I can't see him. I'm probably the only person that has a free-roaming mantid lol, he's trying to get at my wasps this very moment. Looks like I'll have to go out and catch him some more food. He's a pig in a little green costume I tell ya!

He's cool, actually looks friendly too. I am starting to develop more respect for insects, thanks Matt. (notice I didn't say arachnids)

Frog is very cool, thanks for sharing.

It's funny .....how some insects I really like and others just make me jump when they touch me (Palmeto bugs.....)

Yeah, he is pretty friendly I'll take him to work sometimes and let him just sit on a wall somewhere. Mantids are actually closely related to palmetto bugs, which are actually american cockroaches At one point in time I think mantids and cockroaches shared an order, or maybe a subclass or superorder. Maybe they still do for all I know. I know they don't share an order anymore at least.

There's a lot of crickets and grasshoppers on post, so he gets lots of those. But, he really just gets whatever I can catch for him. Harvestmen, moths, as long as its not TOO big, he'll eat it. He has a tough time with beetles though. I like being able to use bugs on post, cause they don't spray anything here. Some AF regulation keeps them from using any fertilizers, pesticides, you name it, cause it could runoff into the Chesapeake. I took a short video of him eating a cricket, but I don't know how to put videos in a post, or even on my website. If I figured that out, I could link to there and you could see him eat I also have a video of him trying to get at my wasps through the plastic of their enclosure.

Very cool, Matt. When my brother and I were young, we used to harass any mantids we found until they showed us their wings... very beautiful yellow with large spots; I think it's so they look like large eyes. I love their heart-shaped heads too.

Thanks for sharing!
