Yeah, the one you saw is a female. The longer, pointier abdomen is characteristic of that. Plus they don't make any noise Males have sound-making organs under their abdomens, and females don't. Unlike crickets and grasshoppers, they don't use their wings or legs to make noise.

they are neat looking and even though they're harmless I still wouldn't want one climbing on me. ick. the only insect creatures that I ever let crawl on me were caterpillars and mantids.

The Australian aborigines eat cicadas, but not this exact species. Like most insects, they're a good source of protein However, people also eat grasshoppers, crickets, termites, and beetle larvae. Well, those are the most common. People also eat scorpions, tarantulas, and all sorts of bugs. Personally, I think zophobus are tastier than crickets. The crix just tickle too much going down

Blach! NO WAY!!! But I thought I remembered that a year or so ago a bunch of people in the midwest or perhaps the east coast somewhere where eating them.
OH, Matt... my dad says that chocolate covered crix taste exactly like Twix candy bars... I've never eaten a Twix since!! (where's the "puke" emoticon???)
Crix... Twix... what's the difference?? (family joke)
