Hi, newbie here... with a question already

Hi Everyone,

I'm thrilled to have stumbled across these forums today. I have one green anole (for about 2 months now) and am completely smitten with him. Setting up proper reptile care has been quite an activity! I'll post pictures when I figure out how to use my new camera.

I do have one question (for the time being) for you folks: How can I eliminate reflection from the inside of a glass enclosure?

Hi and welcome to herpcenter. You can try useing a background or I have some setups with just plan brown paper all the way from one side of the tank to the other.

If you clean the inside of the tank with foaming shaving cream, and wipe it well to make sure that all the residue washes out, it usually leaves the glass cloudy. so there is less of a chance of reflection, there are also the fish tank liners that are used to eliminate glare and reflection.

Hi sacha! Welcome to Herp Center!

Not sure what you mean about the reflection, but if it's when you are taking pictures, then shut off the flash. If its about him seeing himself, then tape a background to the tank. Post a pic sometime!

Welcome to HC. I have problems with my Bearded Dragons seeing each other (I think it is a male thing). I just tape construction paper between the cages.

Thanks for the ideas everyone!

Yep, it was my anole's reflection that was concerning me... He's in a shiny new glass aquarium. When I brought him home from school recently, I thought the lighting change brought his reflection to "life". He even started leaping at the glass from his basking post, and tackling (pacing along?) the glass. But now that I think of it, another possibility is that he was trying to reach a large plant about 1 foot from his cage, because he wasn't bobbing his head. I tried the mirror trick, and *presto*, he bobbed! So maybe the reflection isn't the problem. Jeepers, so much to learn!

His new digs (a used 29 gal tank that isn't so shiny and can hold larger plants) will be ready within a week, and should take care of either problem. In the meantime I'll use the brown paper that will take care of either possibility, but I like the shaving cream and aquarium liner ideas!

Thanks!

I would also try placing some artificial leaves against the problem area of the glass. This will give a visual obstruction and will also give a bit more security to the anole!

Specular reflection is going to be caused by any smooth surface (like glass) putting the shaving cream on it will cause the surface to not be smooth and lead to diffuse reflection which will distort the anoles reflection to itself. If you covered the back, or three of the sides, and orientated the light to reflect off of them it should distort the reflection. However the roughness would have to be inside of the enclosure. But this way at least you can see inside of the front of the enclosure. I was wondering why I never had this problem, all of my vivs have at least the back, if not three sides, covered with substrate. Welcome to HC by the way.
