Thanks for your help with my gecko.

Hi everybody!
I needed to thank the ones who replied to me for the help with my Tokay gecko humidity problem. It is still a work in progress, but I did manage to get the humidity up 10% more. I added more live plants; and most importantly, warning me about the danger of the heat rock. I buried under the reptile bark. (if that is not safe enough please let me know) I am sorry, I didn't want to take it all the way out because I think he likes the add heat sometimes. Plus, the crickets hang around there for some reason.
I wanted to say it is fun to have people to talk to and help me with this. I have a fish bowl in my 55 gallon home for more humidity, and above that I have a mini waterfall fountain. I had to cover the bowl with a lid to keep the crickets from drowning. I wanted to put some live fish in there. I know it is a little stupid, but it looks neat and it doubles as a usable fish bowl and it helps with the humidity. win win right =). I did like the BIG waterfall I did have in there, but it was leaking and...what a mess. I think my Gecko will do some exploring tonight to see my changes. I will probally add more plants and try the wet towel to the top too. THANKS you all!!! I am trying to figure out how to get pics on my computer to show you all my Gecko. (I want to show you my orange tiger striped cat (Kitkat), chocolate lab (Hunter), English spot bunny (Hershey), godzilla newt, cockatiels (Sidney and Harley), and african clawed frog too.

Congratulations on winning the humidity part of the battle! Unfortuantely that heat rock still needs to go. In fact burying them is a known fire hazard. To simulate the same thing, but safely, simply place a rock under your basking lamp. The stone will absorb the heat from the light without the over heating problem.

I agree with Merlin, the heat rock is a fire waiting to happen. Along with putting a rock under the basking lamp you could always get an under tank heater, he would easily be able to warm hisself on it. But Merlins idea is cheaper and has the same effect

Yeah, just cut the cord off of the rock now so you don't feel tempted to use it again. Do you have thermometers in the tank? Because if the lizard and crickets crowd the heat rock you might need to bump up the temp a little bit.

Hello,

I just wanted to echo what everyone said. For a better understanding of why we advise against heatrocks, read this: Heat Rocks, are they Safe?

Taken from the article:

Quote:
If you are currently using a heat rock and have just read this article, you can still use the heat rock. The first thing you need to do however is cut the cord off of it. Now place it under a basking light and allow the radiant heat from above warm it as it would in nature!

THANKS everyone. I already took it out =) I found that the heat rock actually got VERY HOT after burring it, so I took it out. I added two more plants, so now I have five total. I also tried the wet towel on top. It does keep the humidity up longer, but I still have to spray alot to keep it at 60-70% during the day. Also, the water deposits mess up the glass and I haven't been able to wash it off. I was curious to why it is more humid with the heat lamp off. I thought that the heat would make it more humid. The heat is around 80-90 degrees with the heat lamp on (directly under the lamp). The gecko clings the the glass there sometimes. I wouldn't think that it is cold or anything even on the other half of the tank. I have a plant type bulb in the other side, but it doesn't provide much heat. I will put a rock under the heat lamp, thanks. Does anyone know what the humidity is supposed to be for a Tokay gecko or the temperature? I got several different percentages on the internet sites ranging from 70-90% and no lower then 40%. I think the temp is supposed to be 80-90 during the day and 70 at night. Thanks everyone for your help.

Temps shoud be 85-90 during the day with a 15 deg. drop at night. Humidity needs to be high, so around 60-90% is good for them. I know some caresheets say its ohk if the humidity drops below 50% but I wouldnt reccomend it.

I am sure the temp is good during the day, at least under the heat lamp, but at night I don't have any heat without the heat rock. If I cut the cord off the heat rock and put it under the heat lamp, will that work like a real rock to absorb the heat? (at least with the lamp on). I don't have a night heat light for the lamp. (the red color or something). The humidity is good then if I keep it sprayed when the light is on during the day. Maybe, if I get more plexi glass for the other side of the tank, if that would keep the humidity in. I don't know if my Gecko will be able to breath with both sides covered with plexi glass. Right now, I have one side covered with plexi glass and the other 1/4 of the tank with a damp towel. The heat lamp is on the remaining uncovered part.

You don't want to completely seal the tank off. if there is not good air exchange the tank will end up full of mold and fungus.
How warm is the room at night? If its warm enough you may not need any additional heat.

Yeah, I didn't think sealing it off was the way to go. I'm not sure the temp of the room exactly. My guess is in the 70's give or take some. I know when the heat and air is on in the house it shouldn't change so much. When it is off, it is up to the weather and outside temps affecting it.

I think the temps and humidity are good now. I don't know why the humidity is 70% at night (without the heat lamp) and 40-50% with it on, but when I spray and wet the towel on top it goes to 70% and sometimes 80%. I have to keep things sprayed to keep it there.

I am looking for a fountain like I had before to put in the aquarium, instead of the small fish bowl and tiny fountain I have now. It will look more natural. I just have to find on that isn't deep, so the crickets won't go swimming and drown. YUCK! I will put the little fountain in my newts tank then. I sort of like the idea of having fish in the gecko tank. It doesn't look bad, but just not as good as a waterfall fountain.
