Just Joe King
Hello I'm new to the forums.
I have a California King Snake (Joe Poison...he's always Joe King...) I'm 23 and live in Newfoundland Canada. I got Joe when I was 19 and I remember it was the day after my first (and horrible) date. I believe it was October 13th. The pet shop has been very unhelpful and though I've had Joe for a number of years I feel really new to this. You know I asked for something that reads humidity and they passed me a themometer?...and said she didn't hear of them even though there's one in every tank so I pointed to one and she didn't seem to know what they were or where to find them? I haven't found any useful books and have no reptile lover friends and only found the forums yesterday. I'd be very greatful for anyones advice on anything! Just give me a buzz and I'll be very thankful of any information! On that note...Joe shed's really well but yesterday he had a HORRIBLE shed. I have a water dish a humidity box (that he doesn't use) and I spray him every day (3 when shedding). Any other advice? Should I hose the place while he's shedding? Also...he's the same size he was when I got him...he looks very healthy and he eats a fuzzy and a pinky a week. I've never had a problem with him. Is it ok for me to give him something a little more often? Or should I slow it down to somewhere past 7 days because he's almost 4 years old? I'd also like to get some ideas for home made shelters and humidity boxes! Thanks for your help in advanced guys! Terri-Lynn |

Hi Terri-Lynn,
Welcome to HC Network. You have come to the right place for advice. I have a California King named Domino and an Albino King named Popcorn. So far I havent had any shed probs with either of them. IF yours has retained shed, try putting him in a pillow case with a damp towel and that should do the trick. (keep him warm of course) . One of my hides (Domino's)is a mountain like structure which is used also for climbing on. The other (Popcorn's) is a plastic cat pan sized plastic container with a hole cut into a side. Make yourself at home here and remember no question will go unanswered. Lyn

Hello and welcome. You might try backing off a bit on your misting when in shed. Too much moisture can cause the shed to soften and tear. I don't do anything addition with mine and they have perfect sheds. Cal Kings are not a high humidity species.
If the snake is 4 years old you might want to consider upping the size of prey you are feeding. you want to have something about the size of the snakes body at its widest point. Mine eats rat pups, which are about the size of an adult mouse, with no proplem. How big is the snake?

That's the problem...I can see the fuzzies in him right down to the thickest part of his body so they are about him and a half I can't possibly feed it anything bigger and it's very hard to get rat pinkies here which would be a bit bigger right? I believe I saw one before but they were huge compaired to him even some of the mice fuzzies I get are a little on the big side compared to him. How many do you think I should feed him and how often? What should the humidity be for king snakes? when they shed?
