My rescue, Thor
Hi all,
I am a mom with two small human babies and now....a very weak recovering Bearded Dragon. I've been plunged headlong into reptile rehab. Thor is 9 months old 16" long and 130g. He has been poorly cared for and came to me in a 10gal aquarium with a 60watt household bulb that was left on 24/7. These online forums have been my lifeline in caring for him. Such wonderful caring people who share so willingly. I've just moved him into a rubbermaid container 1.5feet X 2.5feet and about 14 inches deep. The regular temps in there are 100 F on one end and about 80 F on the other. I'm in process of getting some serious UVB in there for him. Right now, he has a UVA spot and an hour or so in the sunlight outside each day. He's never had greens or veggies and isn't interested in trying them, so I'm feeding him babyfood squash and greenbeans with a syringe. His back legs are very, very weak and he barely is able to move so it's difficult for him to catch dusted crickets. I refrigerate them to slow them down for him so he can eat 2 doz or so every couple of days. He's pooping in relation to the little he eats and getting powdered calcium and vitamin suppliments and seems to enjoy daily 20-30 minute soaks. He's getting stronger and I'm hopeful that his new MVB is going to help him to perk up and eat better. I've located a good Herp vet, but will have to wait til next month til it is possible to get Thor checked out there. Any suggestions to get him eating greens/veggies? Any other basic care instructions or suggestions?? Right now, I'm getting crickets from my local pet store. When I get things stableized with him, I will work on another alternative for crickets or supers. Thanks in advance for your support as I care for Thor! Dianne |

Hi Dianne and welcome to Herpcenter. Sounds like you have everything under control. Good luck with your little guy and keep us posted. I would put veggies in for him daily but would focus on getting him healthy then trying to get him to eat as you are doing.

Hello and welcome to HCN!
Someone else recently suggested this. Put a little thick fruit babyfood on top of the greens and then stick a cricket upside down in the baby food. As the dragon goes for the cricket he also gets a mouthful of the greens. Good luck with him.

Welcome to the HCN! To slow crickets down you could always rip off their back legs, it works pretty well
. I too would like to thank you for rescuing the little guy! And good luck with him! |
