HELLO newbie here Red Mealworms

wassup guys ,just joined yesterday and was wondering if anybody knows if it is safe to feed RED mealworms to our reptiles ..i purchased them at a local bait store and usually they are a dull orange but now they are a bright red color .I asked the counter person and he says they are that way just because they feed them differently to make them red but we all know how misinformed counter people can be sometimes..i tried looking them up on google and such but couldnt find any information... lets see who the smarty is any information out there???

Welcome to HerpCenter! I've never heard of red mealworms either.
If they are in fact regular mealworms that have been fed something "special" to make them a different color I would be interested to know exactly what it was and why it was used.
And if they can't give you a legitimate answer,...don't feed them to your reptiles! Since they are sold in a bait shop they may not necessarily be safe as a constant food source for your reptiles.

I don't know if this could happen but is it possible that they could have been fed something with red dye in it like cat or dog food and it colored them?

They are most likely not mealworms at all. Some people use worms for fish bait and for composting called red worms, scientific name eisenia fetida. What you have are most likely these. They are also used as feeders, but I'm not sure what they are usually fed to.

I've seen red maggots for sale at the baitshop, but never read mealies. When in doubt I would avoid feeding them to your herps.
