Welcome to HC! A good book that would help you identify popular herps is "Lizard Care From A to Z" by R.D. Bartlett. Go to your local pet shop(s) and they should have it, or go to the library. Some popular skinks are:
Blue-tongued, Spiny, Broad-headed, Fire, Schneider's, Great Plains, Sandfish, and Ocellated (more popular in Europe then America).
If you can't post a picture, give a description of the length, colour, and features. Or, google-image the above listed skinks and find one that matches yours!
You'll find this site extremely helpful. Don't be shy in asking questions, posting pics, or sharing your herp experiences!
