All in the name of pele

Hi everyone!

I am a relatively new Iggy owner. I am so happy to FINALLY have found a forum dedicated to knowledgable reptile owner's. I have come across some pretty hokey places...
I have had Pele for around 1 1/2 years, she is full grown, and her age and sex is unknown to me. I was severely misinformed, until I educated myself with the internet. She's quite a complicated being to take care of, and only recently realize that the poor thing needs UVB lighting. I am know in the process of researching and the purchasing some proper lighting.

She was kinda thrown in my direction, since I am known to care for anything in need of a home. The person that was giving her away said if he didn't find a home for her he was going to let her go in his yard, just like the male of his that got away a few years ago. His male still lives, wandering his yard, with no one able to catch him. I wouldn't just let that happened, so I took her in with the best of intentions. She has proved herself to be patient, inquisitive, and very beautiful. I love her dearly, and so do my kids. She has never hurt anyone, except me, with her claws, when she didn't want to go back home....

As I said earlier, I am sort of just starting new with her. I am currently trying to design a more usable and appropriate cage design. The cage she has right now sucks, and is very difficult and pretty darn impossible to clean, in fact most of it isn't able to be cleaned. I don't have a lot of $$, so I am trying to do this all cost effectively, too. I have considered trying to find her a new home, and have even posted, but have never received a response. I want to keep her, but I also want her to have a good life...
If anyone has any ideas that may help her and I, I just want to make her life the best possible, while I still am able to eat daily. My biggest concern right now is UVB lighting for her. The only UV lighting she can access right now is the window, which I understand is fully inadequate. She has no symtoms of Metabolic Bone Disease, but I don't know if/when the last time she had proper access to it was. The cage she came with has 1 lighting fixture for heat lamps, that came with a flood light, that is it
anyways, I am here to learn, and hopefully make her life better, then she has had in the past

Welcome to Herp Center, like you we took an iggy from someone who was going over to Iraq. I'm not an expert but I dought that Pele is full grown. Ours in 12+ year and has grown 7" since we got him. He now reaches 4'7" Here is a link to basic Care. Check out the navigation bar on the left of the screen look under articles, you'll find a lot of help. I'm sure other will be posting soon with a lot more experience than we have.

Welcome to HCN! You will find several of us that are longtime slaves to these green overloards!
Please check out our iguana care articles. Unfortunately there is still a lot of very bad information on the net.

Hi and welcome to you and Pele to the Herp Center Network. As said, many of us are servants to the tyrant iggys. I'm crazier than most as I took on four of the little piggies...oops I mean iggies.
