Does anyone have any hints on getting my baby bearded dragon to eat his veggies? I have tried all different kinds to encourage him but he is only interested in CRICKETS, CRICKETS and more CRICKETS! LOL A few people have told me to withhold crickets and he will eat the salad if he gets hungry enough...but I don't have the heart to! He looks at me and I know what he wants and I can't say no.

Hello,

Welcome to the HC Network. I hope you find the site useful. Exactly how old is this Bearded Dragon?

Welcome to herpcenter. Unfortunately that is one way to get them to eat veggies, or you can try trickery, lol. He probably only wants to eat moving food, you can try putting some small waxworms in a dish and cover them with veggies to make them move...have you tried hand feeding veggies..mine get spoiled but hey whatever works...But no one here will ever say my dragons are spoiled . What veggies have you tried feeding, when do you try feeding veggies (morning or evening)?

Hee hee... Don't worry about it. He will do fine on crix as a neonate. Just keep offering him his greens fresh every day and he will start eating them when he is ready. Just make sure that the crix that you give him are the same length as the distance between his eyes and dust them every few days. I'm sure that Marsha will give you precise feeding particulars as soon as she sees your thread.

My best guess is he is 2-3 months old. We have had him a month and he's about 6 inches long. There is a petstore by my house that has 4 month old babies and they are bigger. But not cuter

Thanks guys... Marsha, I have tried trickery! LOL I'm embarassed to admit I took a piece and moved it along his branch like a cricket. I've even tried to tickle his snout with it thinking he might eat it out of irritation. He licks (tastes?) it and turns his head away. I feed him his veggies in the morning and leave them in there until my husband gets home and he takes them out. Then we put a small veggie snack in there at our dinner time...along with his "requested" two cricket snack. He sees that cricket box and gets all shades of excited! I have tried kale, spinach, parsley, green beans, peas, carrots, corn, strwaberries, blackberries, kiwi and he turns his little nose up at everything. He did take a small bite of romaine lettuce from my sandwich so I plan to buy some after the batch of kale I just bought is gone. Oh...he did take a bite of celery but since that isn't very healthy for him I don't make it a regular in his dish. I even bought a suction cup clip to clip a leaf to his cage so he can see it easily and rip a bite off if he wants...which he doesn't. Venus, I have no problems admitting my baby is spoiled I seem to have a knack for it...pets, kids, husbands...LOL Thanks for the hint on the cricket size...I have been pretty careful. I usual get rid of the ones I think are too big and sometimes Lewis will ignore the larger ones so I figure he has an instict on what is too much...those go out the window as well I just want to be a good dragon owner and probably fuss over him too much!

Welcome to Herpcenter. I had the same issue with my baby (I bought him from Marsha and he was hand fed veggies,,,,wouldn't touch em out of a dish) I actually tricked him by carving "waxworms" out of carrots and squash and placing them in the dish with a few real worms. It took a few frustrating days but the little guy now eats any veg in his bowl. Good luck

Thanks Ken. I'll try that since I bought some squash this weekend. He does eat his mealworms...but only one a day it seems. How old was yours when you got him? I don't mind hand feeding him and have tried...it's the only two times he has eaten anything! LOL
