New member from Switzerland

Hi everyone,

I just became a member.I'm swiss, and it's interesting for me to compare your site with the German version, where I'm also a member-and to keep up with my english.
My pets are 2 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels,2 cats, fish and 6 weeks ago I became the proud owner of a lampropeltis triangulum sinaloe. She (I think it's a she) is about 45cm long, but is born on 3.Sept.03. Isn't she a bit small for that age do you think? She is a good eater (3 pinkies every week).Maybe she didn't get enough food before.Could I feed her a bit bigger mice?
My dream is to own some cornsnakes (blizzard, okeetee) and a ballpython in the future. But I heard from a breeder that those three are hard to get in Switzerland.First I want to get some experience with my sinaloe.Do you think it's OK to handle a snake twice a week? With mine,I started to "work" with her every Wednesday, that means,to get her used to being handled. Most of the time I keep her in my hands, and sometimes I let her explore the kitchencounter or I let her sit on a houseplant. But all this only up to 15-20 minutes. The second time I get her out is on Saturdays but just for feeding.I don't touch her after feeding.
Now,do you think it's too much stress for her, because I read that many people only take their snake out for feeding time. But it makes me happy just to hold a snake;do you know the feeling? But I'll do what's best for her,of course.
Would be great if I get some answers from the other side of the world,or just around the corner.
Thanks and best wishes to you all who read this

Welcome to HC.I love holding my Kingsnake, I try to at least twice a week.I wouldn't suggest letting her roam on a counter where you prepare food though.

Welcome to Herpcenter. You are our second member from Switzerland!
I handle many of my snakes daily. How often or how long to handle largely depends on the snake itself. Some will take a lot of handling and some won't. you just have to learn what your snake will tolerate.

Welcome Jacky!

Nice to have another member from Switzerland in the forum!! (I'm not really FROM Switzerland; I'm from California. But I've lived here for over 15 years -- near Basel.)
PS -- I'm a part-time English teacher and your English is REALLY good!!!!

I don't have any experience with Kingsnakes, but like Merlin and Venus said, how long you can/should hold them depends mostly on your snake. You will be able to tell if the snake is not comfortable or if it's had enough.
My Ball Python loves being held and going for a little exploration trip across the sofa or carpet. I take him out almost every evening if he's not digesting or in shed.
My Rainbow Boas are not as tame, though, I can only take them out in the evenings and only for about 10-15 minutes before she starts getting agitated. They only get taken out a few times a week.

It sounds like you're doing the right thing. As long as you leave the snake alone for a few days after eating, you should be fine.
As far as feeding: you can feed 1-2 mice that are the same diameter as the thickest part of the snake's body.

Check out the Reptilien Center in Schlieren: http://www.profiterr.ch/
They have various types of corn snakes and a few months ago they had quite a few baby ball pythons: as well as almost any other reptile, scorpion or spider you might want. The owner, Martin Schreiber, is very nice and VERY knowledgeable. The animals there might cost more than at a pet store but they are well-kept and healthy.

Tschüss!
