Hello
Hello, I'm a mother and an animal lover. I was told that maybe you all might be able to help me with a little problem I'm having.
See, I found this collard lizard hatchling stuck in my boys' window screen. She crawled in there through a hole in the screen and couldn't find her way back out. I just couldn't toss her out to be eaten by the local stray cats. All the crickets and such that my boys are catching are almost as big as her head and I'm afraid they are too big for her to eat. Would she be able to survive on frog and tadpole bites? I only thought of it because frogs and lizards have about the same diet in the wild, of course I may be way off base and I don't want to do her more harm than good. I only recognized her for a hatchling as I have seen these lizards in my yard dozens of times and she might be half the size of the ones I normally see, if that! I won't give her these bites unless someone confirms it is the right thing to do ..Otherwise, maybe just mash up the too big bugs?

Re: Hello
Welcome! I would suggest trying to hit up the local pet store tomorrow and getting some appropriate sized crickets. You want to get them as large as you can, but only as long as they are no larger than the space between the lizards eyes.
Here is a caresheet for ya.

Re: Hello
Welcome to Herp Center!
I sincerely doubt that the lizard is going to eat anything that isn't alive!
Collareds are voracious predators and movement triggers them. If you intend to keep it you are going to need to set up an appropriate enclosure. Please check out the caresheet link and if you have any questions we will be glad to help you!

Re: Hello
Thank you very much! My hatchling theory is confirmed, HIS colors started showing this morning. I went out last night to look for bugs myself and found two very small green grasshoppers. He ate them both this morning. I guess I'll just have to catch his meals until he's big enough to eat the bugs the boys can catch. ^-^ Good thing grasshoppers can survive freezing. huh? lol

Re: Hello
You should be VERY careful feeding caught bugs. You never know what they have gotten into and if they have any chemicals (like fertilizer) on them they will pass them on to the lizard.

Re: Hello
Welcome to HC. I also advise against feeding insects from outside. In the wild they are subjected to parasites, predation, etc. In captivity they don't have to be. Feeding prey purchased from the petstore (which you can actually buy crickets small enough for him) will offer him a steady means of adequately sized prey, less work for you, and removes the risk of pesticides and parasites.

Re: Hello
And they aren't that expensive. Most stores sell them for about a $1 a dozen.

Re: Hello
unfortunately I can't get them here. I only have access to one pet supply store within 150 miles. If you could suggest a place online that ships them live that would be appreciated. Besides, seeing as how I don't use chemicals in my yard and I am bordered on one side by state, one side by city, a third side by two empty lots and an home that has been up for sale for a whole year, the fourth side is a road then neighbors whom I have never seen spray. (they have two small children.) How far do bugs travel anyway? I really believe my yard is about as safe as one can get for catching bugs for your pet... They never spray around here cause their too dang lazy... or too cheap... lol. One or the other. Of course I'm not so cheap myself that I would continue to take the risk if I didn't have to. =O So if you know where I can get his dinner shipped live from online please let me know. Thanks!!!
