Severe Reptile Obsession :-)

Hey guys! My name is Leah. I'm 23, live alone with my 3 year old son and my menagerie of animals!

1 Boxer
1 Boston Terrier
1 Long Hair Chi
1 Chiweenie (fostering for a friend)
1 Ball Python
1 African Bullfrog
4 Bearded Dragons - 2 babies, 2 adults
3 Uros

Before I catch any flak - I have one room set up for my growing list of animals, each set up VERY nice.

I had several furry friends until my doctor told me I had asthma, so I moved on to (smaller) and better things. I had researched Bearded Dragons for several months and decided to bite the bullet. I went in to get one, and came out with two, a male and female pair of hatchlings. They had to be separated from the rest of the clutch because they were eating all the food and are about 3 times the size of the babies now! I go in to Petco several times a week for crickets and check on the rest of the crew. :-)

ANYWAY...the reason I joined the forum, I had also been researching Uros and decided that I wanted to add one to my collection. I came across a lady on Craigslist who's son had moved and left several of his reptiles behind. It sounded like a perfect opportunity to give a home to some unwanted pets, so I met the lady. She showed up with a mali trio and a Yellow and Purple (ABSOLUTELY STUNNING) pair of Bearded Dragons in ONE Target tuppaware container, explaining - "they have been doing fine in this so far". I was like..."OH MY GOSH...You've been keeping them (all together) in HERE?!!" They all had a foul smell. When I got them home I immediately rinsed each of the lizards. I understand how important it is for a Uro to stay dry and HOT, but you don't understand. The bottom of the bellies were green, as though they had been kept on an alfalfa substrate. They were very inactive, probably from the wrong temps.

So, now I have 3 mali uros, and they are housed in a 30 gallon until I can get the 65 set up properly, but now I'm worried that it's too small. It's a tall tank, so it seems like there is a lot of wasted space and I wouldn't be able to set temps properly if the lamps would be so far from the uros and the floor.

IDEAS?!! Should I consider trading the 65 tall for something longer? 75? 100? I have SEVERAL other tanks, but they are each 20 gals. Should I separate each of them? I've purchased the uvb lights and basking lamps (for both the new Bearded Dragons and the uros).

Either way, I plan on getting them back into proper health as they look unhealthy and have a foul smell and dirty stained vents. It looks like one of the females has recovered from some tail rot as well. Ugh...some people...

Re: Severe Reptile Obsession :-)

I'd recommend giving them each their own set up, actually. They aren't likely to get along for long when you get them healthy again.

Of course you want to give them as much room as possible, but if you got a 40g enclosure for each of them, I think that would suffice.

We also have a caresheet here that you'll want to look over: Uromastyx Caresheet - Reptile Information - Caresheets Database

Welcome, by the way. It's a good thing they've found their way into your care.

Re: Severe Reptile Obsession :-)

Thanks! I'm actually VERY VERY suprised how calm they were. Of course there was the tail flailing!! When I got them home the male went under the log, one female went to the hot side, and the other female stayed in the middle and they just laid down. I was really worried as they are VERY inactive. I kept the basking & UVB off last night so they could rest and didn't want to screw up the sleep cycle, but clicked it on this am, and alas - THEY'RE ALIVE!! :-) As much as I'm glad that they are with me, I promise you that this lady's kid is going to be IRATE when he realizes his mom hocked his lizards for $25! Especially the Bearded Dragons. They are a beautiful yellow and purple combo. They seem to be extremely dehydrated, so I plan on giving them a good soak today, and taking them outside for a "walk". My son held one the entire way home...she laid in his lap. I was shocked how docile she is. I'll post pics soon!

Here are pics of my other babies...

Welcome! one thing you will learn here is that we don't "give flak". And even if we did, why would you catch any? There was nothing wrong with your list. We have many members with LONG lists of reps they keep. (if only I were able to be one of those!)

Great pics BTW thanks for sharing! Glad to hear the newbies are gonna be taken care of!

I just saw your quote..."We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals." That is something my dad instilled in my years ago (RIP)...I believe it 100%. Beautiful! :-) Your heart is truly shown when you dedicate your time and attention to something that you can't "gain" from. Obviously anyone on this website knows that there is much to gain from a pet, but so many people don't understand!!!

Re: Severe Reptile Obsession :-)

Pyxie frog!!! I'm about to get one of these myself! Welcome to the boards.

I agree on a bigger tank. ESPECIALLY if you are going to try and keep all 3 together! They will get their attitudes back when they are healthy again. I can't remember what the size is for one, but at least triple it for 3. You might be better off custom building something for them.

I'm actually praising the mom who realized her son was not doing a superb job at caring for his animals and practically giving them away. I'm sure she didn't realize just how bad of care it was. Seems like they went to the right home.
